Mmmm. Just after 8:30am. Sitting in my phakhima (a towellike piece of checked cloth used by men as a wraparound. Not the same as the Khmer krama that you always see wrapped around their necks in the movies), having my coffee. Cool enough that we don’t have to run the air-con.
Unfortunately, when it ends, it ends. There is no spring. About mid-February, it will be pleasant temperatures one day, then Wham! Back to 100-degrees-plus from the very next day.
So the old lady refused to replace the furnace because they managed to make it run again last night. This pisses me off, because mother gets calls from her every month all winter because the furnace isn’t working right.
Kansas City (and before that, St. Louis and Florida). I don’t think it ever got below zero in either KC or St. Louis in the 6 years I spent there.
Thankfully, I rented an apartment with underground parking. Worth the extra rent to leave for work in the morning in a car that’s already at 50 degrees and starts right up. And no snow to brush or frost to scrape!
I had no idea that electric blankets cost so much, though. $80? For a twin? Seriously?
Thursday was a challenge – I had to spend the bulk of the day in an area where my car was parked outside. I cracked the windows and put up the sunshade, but it was really hot when I got back to it at the end of the day and I had to crank the A/C at full blast.
And this morning (per the OP) I had to get my laundry out of my trunk before I could get fully dressed for work (because I’m a lazy bastard and take it to a fluff-n-fold), and I had to put my sandals on because it felt like my feet might get too cold if I went barefoot.
It’s okay; I’m from study folk. I can deal with adversity.
It’s 61 degrees at 6:15 in the morning. I may be a pansy but I’m in good company because they bloom all through winter here and I have a flower box full of them on the porch
Moved here from sunny southern California less than a month ago. It’s now 7F at noon. I’ve spent most of my life not even really believing that single digit temperatures actually existed. I’m pretty sure I saw Bigfoot run across the backyard last night as well, although that might just have been a deer.
This morning in Appleton, WI, the temp was 9 (windchill 2)–warm enough to snow… It’s a testament to the awfulness of the previous week that I actually quit breathing through my scarf as I walked to work and thought “Wow, this is lovely.” On the way home from work, I even left my coat open (!)
I feel sorry for all of the other WI dopers who aren’t getting Lake Michigan benefits right now.
Yup, pulled the tags off. They’re not REI brand or anything, FWIW. I went there because I knew they’d still have stock after the cold snap - Sears and Target were cleaned out of the men’s cold weather accessories, and the women’s stuff that was left was useless for actual cold weather. And they had a great sale - gloves were almost half off, and the headband was under $5!
And yes, it was astonishing to see that it was warm enough for chemical salt to start de-icing things again.
It was -31 C (-47 w/ wind chill) here, send some warmth our way!!!
A highlight for me the other day was when the weather forecaster was warning about frostbite and explained to the anchor that wind chill is caused by the wind dontcha know. Who woulda thunk it?
It’s fairly warm here today…in the mid 20’s. A lot better than the -10 on Thursday. The good part is we’ve had no school Thursday or Friday because of the cold, and we have Monday off for MLK. A five-day weekend!!
East of the river it was 5F. It took me 45 minutes to finally get my windshield cleared off (my breath was freezing on it as fast as I was clearing it) in order to drive to the garage to have my dashboard fan motor replaced (a procrastination that I regretted the instant I got into the car this morning).
That’s mostly in the mountains upcountry. And Thais start pulling the coats and sweaters out of mothballls anytime it dips below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. But I used to live way up in mountainous Mae Hong Son province, where it does actually dip to freezing at night this time of year and then return to the 80s in the afternoon.
But I see it was an official 58.5 degrees F last weekend here in Bangkok. That’s rather brisk. Warming up again, though. Last night while keeping the windows open, we finally had to turn the fan on again. Just after 10am now, and we’ve got the balcony doors open. Quite pleasant outside. Mmmmm.
