How do bigots explain this?

You mean, like “La Raza?”

If only I had realized how powerful the Jewish authorities were… pushing around the Roman administrators… next thing you know those clever Jewish authorities will be convincing gentiles to wear yarmulkes by disguising them with giant mouse ears…

Wow! I didn’t know that! Do you have a cite for that matt_mcl?

Zev Steinhardt

To nitpick a little, I think the Gospels teach that Jesus killed under apathy of the Romans, not protest. Pilate essentially said, “Well, I don’t really see anything all that wrong with the guy, and I’d rather just smack him around a little (crucifictions in those days being even more expensive than the gas chamber), but if it will prevent civil unrest, we’ll kill him.” (as paraphrased from Luke 23:16-24, Matt 27:22-24).

I think “Christian” anti-Semitism comes from Matt 27:24-25:

Most Christians don’t hate Jews, of course, but some people interpret Bible verses to mean anything they’d like them to. Some Christians hate Catholics, some Protestants, some propeller hat wearers. The point is that hate is supported by the hater’s perspective, not an objective perspective. You can find a reason to hate anything, even the aforementioned propeller hats (although that takes one sick puppy).

A search of http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/ will undoubtably reveal more New Testament anti-Semitism.

I actually saw a panel show in which a bigot was trying to rationalize his views. It was scary, but one of the things he cited was that in one of his epistles, Paul mentions “the Jews who killed Christ.” I can’t find the book, chapter and verse now, but at the time I looked it up, and son-of-a-gun, it’s there, all right!

Thing is, in its context, it’s clear Paul is referring to the particular Jewish religious leaders who conspired against Jesus and arranged for his arrest and execution in collusion with the local Roman authorities. Not all Jews everywhere. This should be obvious anyway, since Paul would have been implicating himself and most of the comtemporary missionaries/theologians.

But this idiot had decided the Bible validated his hatred of Jews. You can make any document prove anything if you try hard enough, I s’pose.
