I have a gmail account, because I am an active user of Blogger. It’s a good service, easy to use, but I really haven’t used it much…I have a university account which is much easier and all my mail is sent there already.
But yeah, it’s fun, and nicely designed. I was glad to be able to get the username I wanted, which was a good perk of being one of the first!
remisser, I’d never heard of orkut (weird name!) before you mentioned it. How is it different from Friendster?
And no fair trying to horn in on my desperate attempt to get a gmail invite! This is my tread and I deserve it. I even wrote a better poem than Revtim (sorry, Revtim, but its true) and I still didn’t get one! I can’t be patient any longer. Someone give me a gmail account, dammit!
The big drawing factor is 1gig of space. I wanted it early to be sure I got the name I wanted. It’s likely going to be popular, so common-ish names might go fast.
In related news, I read yesterday Yahoo is going to incease their free email capacity to 100 meg. Pretty good, but it’s no gigabyte.
Still, I’m happy they increased it because I use a Yahoo account frequently, which I still want to use because I can synch my Outlook calender and contacts with it (which Gmail doesn’t do and may never do).
Just thought I’d update you – I have not one, but two gmail accounts. I got one for me and one for my wife. Allow me to tell you how:
I went to my local areas craigslist site (for me it’s boston.craigslist.org, go to craigslist.org to find one near your area…) and I made a post in the WANTED (or was it a TRADING section?) and I said that I wanted a gmail account and I offered free advanced screening movie passes that I sometimes get. The responses were quick and fast. I got offered a few invites, but only needed two, because anymore and it’d be hard to keep track of favors. So, instead of going to sites like gmailswap.com you should consider going to lesser known routes and go where the nerds of the net go.
I got mine through a friend in the business. I gave my SO an invitation which they sent me. From the prices on ebay it looks like they’re already pretty easy to come by.
