How do I kill Nero Scout?

Actually, this is a 2-parter:

(1) I’ve tried disabling Nero Scout (part of Nero 7 Home Essentials) by using Task Manager, but after a few hours it resurrects itself again. Haven’t found a way to disable or uninstall it via Nero’s software, either. Can anyone help?

(2) How do I disassociate *.DAT files? (Nero wants to thinks they are media files, but Nero is clearly mistaken.)

(Windows XP, Service Pack 3)

Have you tried this?

You can change the file association in Folder options. Do you know how to use that?

Everything makes sense until this part:

I don’t have a My Computer icon, at least not one I can double-click on. There’s a My Computer folder in the Start Menu, but it only lists my drives. I found an entry for Nero Scout under Accessories, but right-clicking gives no “Options” option, and “Properties” doesn’t seem to have anything useful.

ETA: If I’m reading correctly, I can kill NmBgMonitor.exe via the Task Manager safely? (I do use Nero a lot.)

Ah, so that’s where it was…done, thanks.

ETA2: Okay, I figured out how to enable the My Computer icon, but as before, Nero Scout isn’t listed anywhere. :frowning:

Since I don’t have that program installed, I guess I can’t help you further. Try googling Nero Scout.

However, just FYI: If you don’t have a My Computer icon on the desktop, just execute IE (Explorer) and put any valid drive letter in the address line, like “C:” <enter> You now have a My Computer program!

I don’t know what that does, but you usually can kill any program that way in spite of the dire warnings. My WAG is that program is an unneeded auxiliary to Nero, but some more googling might give you more info & confidence.
