How do I open this file?

I was trying to find my old favorite places on AOL on my old computer(166 Mhz). I found the file and saved it to a floppy disk. I brought it up on my new computer (400 mhz), but I can’t figure out what application to open the file with. I tried Wordpad and Msworks, but all that comes up is the titles of the favorite places, not the URLs, and all the rest is filled in with some sort of squares, and weird ASCII characters(at least I think they are).
What application can I use to open this file?
CAN I open this file?

Thanx

Use AOL to open the file. Just click on the Save/Replace button on your Favorite Places window and open the file.

I forgot to mention that I do not have AOL on my new computer. My ISP is MSN, I switched from AOL because I was unhappy with their service. I know I can’t switch the file over to my MSN favorite places, but if I could at least open up the file as a read file, so i could copy some of the URLs down. BTW the two computers are across town from each other at the moment.

Try notepad or the old DOS Edit.com, something that will read just the text and not try to format the control codes (the little black squares). I doubt any other program other than AOL will let you view it 100% correctly, but you should at least be able to cut&paste the names out of it.

http://www.syncit.com offers an AOL favorite places import utility as part of their service.

You might also try aoleave.com.

If you gave us the name of the file & it’s extension, then perhaps we could tell you what to open it with…
