What file extension or by what file name does AOL natively store your bookmarks (Favorite Places) in? I know that when you back up your favorite places they are saved with a .PFC (Personal Filling Cabinet) extension but I can assure you that no file on this computer carries said extension. However, a favorites list from an older copy of AOL (see below) is still available so I suspect there is some .DAT file or the like storing this info. Does anyone have a clue what this file might be named?
(Long, involved details)
My sister in law’s AOL blew up today, when accessed you still get the little blue initialization screen but in place of the sign in screen she is getting a cheerful “An error has occurred, please try again. If problem persists, reinstall AOL” message. And if you can imagine, this is one of three houses in the northern hemisphere without an AOL CD sitting under a beer glass.
Now about a year ago they upgraded to a new computer and had the entire contents of their old hard drive copied to their new system and low and behold there is (after a little simple configuration) a working copy of AOL right on the drive (whence I post you from now).
The problem is that all her favorite places (bookmarks) on this copy of AOL are a year out of date and many of the now missing contacts involve support and information for the foreign adoption process they are soon to be finalizing. The defunct copy of AOL doesn’t initialize to the point of logging a screen name so no favorites list can be accessed from it. But it seems that all the files and sub folders of the damaged AOL (redundancy alert) are still available, I would hope that if the correct file is moved to the older copy all those bookmarks may be retrieved.
Any assistance or insight will be most greatly appreciated.
