My girlfriend is interested in joining the SDMB, and I tried to make a profile for her, but when I go to register it says “You’ve already registered under the name Jman, if you’ve lost your password…” Well, I want both myself and her to be able to use the computer under different names, so how do I do that? Do I have to delete the SDMB cookie?

Go to the main SDMB page. Just below the forum listings is a “Log out” link that will erase your cookies.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t work…I’m not actually logged in. I tried logging in, and I can’t…odd…but since I’m not logged in, I can’t log out, and it STILL won’t let me register a new name. Very confused.

That’s odd. What browser are you using/ I’m using netscape and when I hit “log out” it told me it erased my cookies, and before I could post this response, I had to provide my screen name and password.
I’m sure someone else will be along who can help you out.

That’s a big commitment, man.
I always have to enter my name and password for every post. For some reason, I can’t log in here. I have no problems with cookies and remembered logins on any other site, which is odd. The point is that even without being logged in, I can’t register a new name. Why is the board set up this way? It’s really frustrating. The same thing happens on both IE5 and Netscape 6. Help!!

I got it to register via opera…say hello!

Jman, check your browser settings. For example, in Netscape 4.7 (the version I’m using), under the Advanced section of the settings, I could tell it to never accept cookies. Maybe that’s your problem.
Well, I got it to work by downloading opera and then using that to register her. However, I have cookies set to accept on both IE and Netscape, and I still have never been able to log in from home. It’s really odd. All the other sites I go to use cookies just fine.

It isn’t set up that way, it’s set up both ways, with or without cookies.
Go to your Profile (button at top of page) and change your setting for “Store Username & Password in browser memory” to YES. Do that for shaerac as well. Then the “logout” button will appear on the main board menu at the bottom right. Log out and she can log in.
The browser you use is irrelevant that way.
