How Do I Stay Logged In?

Before the Great Crash of April – hardly a man is now alive – I used to close my browser, then open it again, and find myself still logged in to the SDMB. I didn’t have to put in my name and password; I was still remembered.

Isn’t working that way now, even though I have checked the “remember me” box. Is there a secret somewhere? I’m using Firefox on Windows 7. Nothing that I know of has changed.

Lazy. Just lazy.

Same issue here, using Chrome.

In fact, I don’t even have to log out. I posted in another thread, then came here and had to log in again. Looks like it’s timing out.

Yeah, several people have reported similar problems post Black Thursday. If that’s all that broke, we got of really easy.

Ed stated in the Outage thread that this is a consequence of the security measures put in place after the attack.

Oh, good, he says they’ll be worked out. Having to keep logging in would put a dent in my enjoyment of the board.

I presume we’ll eventually be able to use the quote functions again too.

Soon, I hope.

I log in successfully from either Chrome or Firefox, but then immedately get logged out again a click or two later.

I’m writing this via a Tor browser. Perhaps the regular browsers are using an IP address that got blacklisted due to my log-in attempts. If so, it may self-heal — I think my Fly-By-Nyte WyFy Guy keeps assigning me new IP adderesses(?).

I believe it’s got something to do with the cookies the board is setting.
I can’t get;

the “Quick Reply” box to stay closed,
the “Posting Rules” box to stay closed,
the “read thread” thingy to update,
the “go to first unread post” thingy to update,
or stay logged in.

All of which really suck and makes it really hard to navigate and read threads.
Hopefully someone fixes all this . . . but I’m not holding my breath!

CMC fnord!

Much like the TSA, the additional security features are causing things to be worse than if they did nothing.

The Quote button seems to be working for me, but I haven’t tried posting yet.

ETA. Seems to be OK.

It’s happening to me too. Safari on an iPad.

Ed finally outed himself?

Took off my belt and shoes just in case.

Understandable, but why do you not have any pants on? Seems inappropriate after all we’ve just been through.

I think it’s a cookie issue. My last visit is frozen at 4-21-16 1:33pm.

Not only does the board not remember my login, it does not remember threads read. Every time I come back every post since the outage is shown as unread. It’s like deja vu all over again!

I’m staying logged in for about an hour, then it drops. But if one navigates to a link that doesn’t have the new hash code (s=<32 digit hex number>) in the URL, you are shown as not logged in. Looks as if it is checking continuity of IP address too (although that might be a coincidence for me.)

It looks as if the system is using the new hash code instead of cookies.

It is all somewhat painful. But the system is working. The spammers are back, so it is working well enough for them.

Huh. I didn’t even notice that.

But, yeah, when I use the new url to my favorites, it now remembers me.

So, we have to bring cookies to stay logged in now? Can I just send the mods a pie every month or two?

It’s multi-quotes that’s not working.

the upsides of using a password manager (LastPass) is that getting logged out is no big deal, it auto-fills the user/password fields for me.

plus, in the case that passwords were compromised (though Ed says they likely weren’t) I’m secure in the knowledge that my password here is unique to SDMB.

Yeah, I’ve noticed something very strange here since the board has come back.

I’m allowing cookies on this site, and triple checked that. But I can’t stay logged in, or retain my display mode settings, not only from one browser session to another, but from fresh visits through my bookmark.

Looking closer, I notice something about the URL following my login. It contains a long “s” argument like

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/forumdisplay.php?f=3&s=************&

where the asterisks are some big hex number. If I cut and paste that argument into a new browser request, I’m logged in. It looks like this server is now set to pass a session id through the URLs rather than in a cookie. Inconvenient as hell.

ETA:

DAMN! here’s an example of why I don’t like this - I usually use “linear” display mode, and when I opened this thread the only thing I saw was the first message. I didn’t realize the rest were here - yeah, I know, there was a thread display at the top. Like I said, I don’t usually use that mode.
