How do I stop the Windows 10 upgrade

Microsoft is very insistent to upgrade my laptop to Windows 10, however I do not want to upgrade at the moment.

Now I am unable to remove the screen that is asking me to if I wish to upgrade. It now wants me to specify a date and time for the upgrade and as I read it once I set that date and time it is final the upgrade occurs.

Task manager is Unable to remove.

How do I remove this ?

I use GWX Control Panel from http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/. It’s free and simple.

Another option is Never10. It seems to be smaller and simpler than GWX Control Panel. It seems to get good reviews. I downloaded it and installed it last week, and haven’t gotten any notices since. I’m not a computer expert, though, so perhaps someone can chime in about Never10.

There is no need to download third party software. You can permanently hide GWX notifications.

You can right-click on the date/time in Taskbar system tray and select “Customize notification icons” option. It’ll open a new window. Now look for GWX (Get Windows 10) entry in the list and change its value to “Hide icon and notifications” using the drop-down box.

I did that, and it came back, the very next day.

I also use GWX.

It’s like a cat.

Exactly.

I had disabled the notifications in Windows. They came back once a week, then once a day. When they started coming back twice a day I installed GWX Control Panel; haven’t had a single issue since.

This has risen to a level of annoyance that has me hoping someone starts a class action lawsuit for harassment. Honestly, what part of “NO” from the last 40 refusals did you not understand.

If the person responsible for this had the balls to admit it in a bar then I can’t really guarantee civility will follow.

I believe that Microsoft can hire better lawyers that anyone else.

One thing to watch out for is optional updates. They try to slip Windows 10 upgrade software in through those. They often have vague descriptions about addressing an issue with Windows. To get more details you have to click on a “more info” link which will take you to a webpage that describes what the update does in more detail. Some are legitimate, others say things like “supplies the user with information about Windows 10”, or “prepares for upgrading to Windows 10” or something similar.
The fact that they make you jump through hoops to get the full description makes it appear, at least to me, that they’re trying to sneak it past you.

If it’s asking you for a date, couldn’t you just give it a date 100 years in the future, or the like?

I set a date to upgrade back when it was on pre-order, did the upgrade, had windows 10 for about 30 min, then went back to Windows 7. I tend to get the upgrade now screen whenever I re-start, but I always just hit the little x before the window has time to fully load, and it goes away.

I agree it is very annoying, and if they try and force me into it the change I will not be happy!

I think it just offers a few choices like ‘now’, ‘tomorrow’, ‘in 3 days’.

If you care that much, install GWX, and you won’t have to think about how unhappy you intend to be.
