Ok, I’m not really skilled at this computer stuff.
I go to various updare sites for Netscape & Java, & the instructions are a little, well, scanty. So, because I don’t understand how to do it, I hold off.
Experienced people–some advice?
Bear in mind, I share a computer with somebody else, & a mistake could cause friction.
Start your current browser. Go into HELP then ABOUT XXX. The screen that pops-up should have the current version of your software listed.
Now go to Netscape and see what the latest version available is. If it’s newer then download the new file to your computer (pay attention to where you save it to). Once the download is complete go to where you saved the file and double-click on it. This will start the installation of the new browser.
The new browser should be smart enough during installation to look at your old installation and transfer over any unique settings and things like your favorie list.
If you use Internet Explorer then go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com . Click on Product Updates. Your computer will check to see what updates it needs to bring it to current specifications including the latest browser for IE (5.5). This is a pretty slick thing Microsoft has and should be self-explanatory when you get there. Even if it isn’t links exist on the page to follow if you need more detailed help.
Netscrape also has a self-update feature on its website. I’m not sure what they are calling it, but it is just answer some questions (what OS, what language, etc.) then click OK and it downloads a new version & installs it over itself. Of course, you have to give up some marketing info first, but it really is quite simple.
