This has been driving me crazy. I’ve found two of the films on my big List of Three, namely Nosferatu (from Kino) and M (from 1worldfilms.com), but I have been constantly stymied in my attempts to buy a VHS of Moroder’s version of Metropolis. Google has been no help. I don’t trust the versions Amazon.com is selling to be Moroder’s version. Can any of you help me?
You’re right not to trust the Amazon site–I think they link up Moroder on a keyword search because of the Maltin blurb, but none of them use the artwork created specifically for that reissue.
There are, however, several sales on e-bay of this out-of-print VHS title. Here’s currently the cheapest, with a picture of the artwork you do want (in case you don’t know what it looks like):

I did a search at http://www.Facets.org , which has a very large selection of hard to find VHS tapes. After you try a search, There is another search area where they will contact you with information about where you might be able to find it. I think they also sell many used tapes. Hope you are able to find it.
A quick search of EBay turned up 3-4 copies.
Um… I have a copy, I’ll dub it for ya if you want, wait is this legal? If not well I’m sorry for posting it. My copy is copyright 1984 Giorgio Moroder Enterpises, LTD and it’s 87 minutes long, it also has the same cover from the link that ArchiveGuy posted. I think my E-mail address is in my profile

The entry at Facets.org didn’t specify if it was the Moroder version. It also didn’t give a shot of the cover. At $25, I want to be pretty sure of which version I’m getting.
ArchiveGuy:
Thanks. I think I’ll go with the Ebay version you pointed me to. (You know, I never thought to check Ebay before. I think Ebay will be higher on my list when I buy my next obscure film. :))
LifeWillFall:
Thanks for the gesture. It turns out we probably won’t have to test the legality of your offer, but I’m flattered you would make it.
To everyone:
Thank you all. The Teeming Millions are truly the Internet’s Greatest Resource, and the internet may well be one of mankind’s greatest accomplishments. I have learned more than I ever thought I would about three rather obscure German films because of your patience and knowledge.
…let us not forget The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

You might want to look in used video stores and at flea markets. I obtained two copies at used video sales, and gave one to a friend.
I find it obscene that you can’t get this on VHS or DVD, while you CAN get the old decrepit version.
You might want to consider getting the KINO copy of Metropolis. It doesn’t have a lot of the restored scenes, but it’s struck from a MUCH better negative than the usual edition, so the scenes aren’t completely washed out.
One othe possibility – there are companies that rent video by mail. You might rent it and dub your own copy from.
CalMeachem:
Kino, eh? I can’t find it in their online video catalog. Can you save me some trouble and point me to it?
