I’m a dyed in the wool Yankee - born in Maine and grew up there and in Massachussetts. Now I live in the norhtwest, so I guess now I’m a western Yankee??
I visit mom and dad in Florida on occasion and I’ve never understood the whole bolied peanuts thing. I’ve tried them in a couple of different flavors and I don’t find them repugnant or anything (although I did chuck out the ‘cajun’ flavored ones… ouch) - I just find them odd and I don’t understand why they hold such a fascination for some folks, that’s all.
'course I don’t understand okra, grits, chitlins or any number of other ‘southern’ dishes either.
I’ve been lurking for months, and just had to register to post to this thread…I LOVE BOILED PEANUTS! Look forward to any road trip to buy some on the roadside.
Welcome to the world’s greatest message board earthpuppy.
MMMMMMMMM… boiled peanuts! And beer! Now I’m gonna think about that all day. What’s so great about “bald” peanuts? They are food of the gods, and what other legume could cause a lurker to become one of us just so he/she could post about em?
I do know that boiling takes much less time, +/- 1 hour. Then you let the peanuts sit in warm water for a while (adjust for taste and texture) and you’re done.
Love me some peanuts. Peanut butter, roasted peanuts, salted or unsalted. Peanuts served in Central America dusted with chili powder and sprinkled with lime juice. I’m going to Norway tomorrow, and I’m taking a big container of peanut butter cookies with me, in case I get homesick.
Although not born there, I grew up in South Carolina.
I love boiled peanuts. I haven’t seen them here, which is probably a good thing, because I’m as addicted to them as I am sunflower seeds. I can’t stop!
I had a lady from Gawgia raving to me about bald (balled?)peanuts this, bald (balled?) peanuts that…I finanally asked her WTF a bald (balled?) peanut was…she said, “You know, ball them in salt water!” like I was from an alien planet an couldn’t comprehend balled (bald?) water.
But I have still never had one…they don’t sound particularly tastey…I like salted and roasted.
Green, uncooked peanuts? I assumed I could just zip over to the grocery store and buy a bag o’ peanuts. I never knew there were such things as green, uncooked ones. Are the Planter’s kind already cooked? Can I buy a bag of peanuts in the shell, and use those?
This must be quite a Southern thing, because my Yankee self is baffled.
