How do you grate your Parmesean?

The OP reminde me of my mechanically declined buddy, who might be the only other person in the world to find use of a box grater problematic.

I have a straight grater, wish I still had the box style.

Not that I need to see it as I know what the OP is talking about. Just curious.

Wife: “Honey, we need Parmesan for what I’m making for dinner. Pick some up on the way home, will you?”

Me: “Grated or shaved?”

I’ve got the hang of the box grater for cheese I need to grate on the medium sized holes. I have issues with the tiny holes on the one side which only seem to spray hard cheese nubbins all over the goddamned kitchen and barely any fall inside the box!

Maybe you’re right. I may be doing it wrong and I’m going to have to talk to my box grater, “It’s not you, it’s me”.

Here’s my Cheese Weasel. It works reliably, passes easily around the table, refills easy. I don’t think it’s really meant for big grating jobs but is a nice tool for topping a dish with cheese.

I use a drum grater, much like Qadgop’s weasel (which sounds like a real animal, Mustula mercota I think), but mine has a gasket around the plunger that pushes down the ungrated cheese, and a plastic cap that fits over the exit end of the drum, so it’s more or less airtight with the cap on. That allows you to store the ungrated cheese in the grater, which is convenient. Works well enough.

For me, it’s the microplane or the medium sized holes of a box grater if I need larger amounts. Personally, I’ve never felt the need for anything else.

Eh, I just buy it pre-shredded or grated in plastic tubs in the cheese section of the grocery store. I’m the only one who uses it and I’m not saving money buying wedges or wheels. There are several kinds of parmesan-romano, and the cheese guy will happily sell me a $2 container instead of a $10 container.
