How do you grate your Parmesean?

Because I am fucking about to choke this one to death.

We go through so much Parmigiano Reggiano it might be cost effective for us buy a goddamn wheel of the stuff. That shitty grater above sucks and I hate its guts.

What do you use? The fine holes of a box grater? That shit gets everywhere. Cube it and whip it around a food processor? I find it gets a bit pebbly. A microplane? what about for large amounts in recipes?

Give it up! How do you grate?

Food processor for large amounts in recipes, because in every recipe I can think of that I use it for, it melts and gets un-pebbly. Microplane for smaller amounts.

I use a coarse microplane when I need more than a little bit and a fine one when I don’t.

If I need a lot- multiple cups or something, I’ll probably go by the local gourmet food place and buy it pre-grated, or barring that, use the food processor grater disk.

Stop making so much sense everyone - anyone ever buy a wheel?

Nope. My mom gave me one once. I think it broke the second time I used it. Never saw the sense of replacing it. We hates unitaskers, we does, precious…

I’m sorry - I meant a wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano. The crap ass grater I have now is a rotary style and now it’s dead.

Yep, another happy microplane user here. Quick, safe, easy to clean. For large amounts just do it for longer - that’s why you have kids, isn’t it?

Just keep grating! The stuff in the green cardboard can doesn’t compare to fresh grated Parmesan cheese.

Microplane or just shave it!

I use my potato peeler to shave it.

I use a box grater. Just grate it onto a cutting board and pick it up with a scraper. Or a microplane, those work too.

N.B. If the cheese has been around a while it gets hard and difficult to grate no matter what you use.

OH! No on that account, too. A wedge costs me $12, which I can only justify because it generally lasts a couple of weeks…I can’t imagine how much a whole wheel would be!

If you want finely grated parmesan I can recommend an almond grinder like this one. It works perfect.

I buy mine pregrated from the deli. Blasphemy I know.

Yeah, the one you linked sucks. I had one for a while that I bought to purchase one of these that had broken (after something like 15 years of use… I don’t think the breakage was a reflection on the device.) I think at the time the one the OP linked was the only one available from Zyliss, but we must not be the only ones who thought it sucked because they brought back the other style, as you can see from my link. Just go buy one of those.

That said, I only use it for bigger jobs, like when I need 1/4 cup or more grated. For just a sprinkle over eggs or whatever, I use a microplane, which works grate (ha!) for small jobs.

The easiest way to grate Parmesan:
Proceed to the dairy section of Kroger; place bag of shredded Parmesan in cart. Pay cashier at check out. Enjoy.

Really though, I used to have one of these from Pampered Chef and I loved it. Works great for other foods too.

Another vote for a microplane. It’s really an essential kitchen tool.

Honestly I just buy the big tube of Kraft grated parmesan at Costco.

If for some reason I need to grate from a wedge, I just whittle off thin slices and chop it up with a knife. I’m not sure I even own a grater.

We’ve used our cheese weasel (I mean wheel) for years, it’s nice and dependable, is passed around the table easier, and is much less messy than a microplane (tho I do use that for small grating jobs).

Oh man that’s perfect. That fella for large amounts and microplane for serving at the table!

On preview I may change my user name to Cheese Weasel. Thanks Q!
