After many years of loyal service, my Zyliss rotary cheese grater was mortaly wounded in a fight with the dispose-all. I still have a box grater, which I use for the softer cheeses and shredding vegetables, but for hard cheese and chocolate, nothing beats a rotary. I could just get another Zyliss, but since the Dope contains the collective experiece of some of the smartest people on the net, I though I’d solicit your recomendations. What kind of cheese graters do you all know and love?
I use a Microplane for hard cheese. I see they make a rotary model, but I just use a flat one - this model, to be precise.
Oh, man, I couldn’t live without a Zyliss.
I bought a new one because I really needed two. They’ve changed the style a little to something they must think is more ergonomic. I might be an old reactionary, but I still pick up the old one before I use the new one. The old one seems to have more leverage.
I use one we got at IKEA. It’s a little “tupperware” box with two grater lids that fit on it. It has a no-slip bottom.
You hand grate the cheese, but it all falls right into the box. It’s pretty convenient. We make our own pizza, so we use it pretty often.
I second the Microplane suggestion. They make a great grater. I use this one, but I may consider picking up their rotarty model, now.
I’ve had a Zyliss for years, and it sucks. For Christmas I got a Microplane, and I cannot believe this thing isn’t in every kitchen in the world.
Mine is designated ‘coarse’ and it’s the only grater I will use for the rest of my long and fruitful life. It blasts through everything.
I got that for my birthday this past october, I love it…SO much easier to keep clean than the box grater I had been using!!! I also recommend it=)
I second the 35000 series, they come with a cover that covers the teeth so that the grater doesn’t get bashed up when in the drawer between uses.
