How do you normally dress?

My style is…eclectic. I’ll wear anything that I find that I like, regardless of style. There are a few things I avoid, being over 40, and carrying an extra 15 lbs. of weight–anything too tight, shiny fabrics.

Work is business casual, so I’ll wear anything from khakis/casual tops to full-on women’s business suits, depending on the day’s plans and my mood. And on Fridays we get to wear jeans! So for example, today, I’m wearing jeans, a cream-colored dressy t-shirt, and this weird, very hard-to describe jacket in patches of complimentary fabrics, solid and print. It has a giant raglan shape to it, and all of the buttons are different. Here, wait, I’ll take a picture of it:
100_1957 | Rhonda | Flickr Oh, and I made the necklace I’m wearing.

And yet, on Wednesday, I was wearing a pair of slim, charcoal colored slacks, black tunic-length sweater, white mock-neck top, and black shoes. So, you know, whatever appeals on any given day.

Edit–I wear jeans on the weekend, with just a graphic tee if I’m staying in, or just doing a grocery run, or with a nice sweater or top if we’re going “out.” Summertime might include some light-weight, casual dresses, if I’m in the mood.

Edit redux–I do my shopping anywhere and everywhere, from moderately upscale shops to consignment shops to the Goodwill.

In my current job, M-Th jeans are unacceptable, then Fridays are “casual” and people bring clothes which I find strange outside the house, much more in a business setting… there’s a guy who’s brought white tees so old they were almost transparent, for example.

My ideal place involves “no need to dress as a woolly sheep” but also “please leave your ‘sex instructor’ tees at home and do not display your underwear.” “Good” jeans and blouses, good jeans and tops, good jeans and good tees, slacks and blouses. I like being able to dress at work as I dress outside work (of course, with attention to safety, I won’t bring open-toed shoes when I’m working in a factory).

My shopping involves places ranging from the weekly street market to Zara to boutiques. I avoid department stores and places where the attendants inform you that “we don’t have your size” without waiting to hear what are you looking for (Mango, I’m looking at you).

In the winter, I’ll typically wear jeans like this.
A small t-shirt with some kind of humourous/interesting design on the front (typical of this store), and a hoodie from Abercrombie or American Eagle. The shoes I wear all the time are either Merrell’s, which I have in several colors, or Converse.

In the summer I’ll wear the same kind of tees, along with long shorts like these, and Birkenstocks.

I wear the same thing to work as I do other days. My job has no dress code and we don’t need one for what we do.

We don’t have a dress code where I work, but I am a reporter and deal with the public a lot so I like to dress well. I once went to a press conference for Sen. Norm Coleman and sat next to a reporter who was wearing black sweatpants and shoes that were so scuffed it was difficult to tell that they were black. I immediately vowed never to do that. In winter, I wear dress slacks and a nice sweater. In the summer, I’m a tad more casual, adding khakis and dress capris/bermudas to the mix, paired with dressy tops. I do allow myself to wear jeans to work once a week (not limited to Friday; some of my co-workers wear jeans every day), but always wear a nice sweater or top with them. Today, for instance, I’m wearing boot-cut jeans, a turquoise u-neck sweater with a white tank peeking out from underneath, black boots and belt, and a silver necklace and earrings. I usually plan out what I’m going to wear at least a day in advance, sometimes several days or a week. Last-minute changes may be made due to weather.

I’m trying at the moment to expand my casual wardrobe and allow myself to be more casual outside of work. I don’t really wear many T-shirts (never with logos), but I am starting to have a bit of fun with layering cute Ts. I also don’t wear sweatshirts unless I’m sitting around a campfire or on my way to the gym. Most of the time, my casual wardrobe looks a lot like what I would wear to work if I’m wearing jeans.

What did I miss? Ah, shoes and outerwear. I mostly wear flats but do have some slightly higher-heeled loafers and boots. I only wear high heels on really dressy occasions. I’m tall enough as it is and I never know at work when I’m going to be walking out in someone’s field. Plus, this is Minnesota. I don’t love sneakers and don’t wear them much outside the gym, but do think skimmers are cute. I have several pairs of those for more casual dress in the summer. As for outerwear, I’m a wool coat/pea coat girl. I have two black ones, one of which is a tiny bit more casual and has a hood. That’s my main coat. I also have a long black pea coat, a camel one that just covers my butt and ties around the waist, and a shorter one that’s gray. I do have a puffy coat, but I really only wear that to the gym. My summer jacket is an orchid-colored pea coat, and I also have a couple of denim jackets.

ETA: I buy most of my clothes at Old Navy, Maurice’s, and Goodwill. My favorite jeans are BKE from the Buckle.

If I leave the house wearing pants I consider it a success. Without looking down I can’t tell you what color shirt I have on. Shoes are for protecting the feet. I have two hats - the rain hat and the cold hat.

Heh… During Spring, Fall, and Winter, I wear the following pretty much daily:

  • Black jeans. Levi’s, Wrangler, Carhartt (can’t spell it), brand unimportant, I get them all at Gabrial Brothers for $5 to $8 a pair.
  • White or Deep Red T-shirt. Again, usually from Gabrial Brothers - They have t-shirts priced at 3 for $5.
  • Black Rockport sneakers.
  • Black felt Fedora (complete with feather in the brim) or Driving Cap
  • Random accessories; wrist cuffs, a collar, necklaces, wristbands, a belt, whatever I feel like.
  • Supervillain coat. Floor-length black trenchcoat with silver buckles and corset straps.

In summertime, when wearing black leads to misery on an unprecedented scale, I wear khaki or denim shorts and lightweight, light-colored t-shirts, with sandals. Pretty much the polar opposite of what I wear the rest of the year.

For family gatherings that require me to look nice, I wear khaki pants and a nice button-up shirt, plus my black leather jacket and the aforementioned driving cap. It actually looks pretty nice.

I’m in college, and unemployed, so I can wear whatever I feel like and be as wierd as I want. Most of my clothes are gifts or discount-store purchases.

I’m pretty much business casual: slacks and a polo shirt. I wear a uniform when I participate in Taekwondo, but nowhere else.

I was a high schooler before I was a stay-at-home-mom; as such, my “look” didn’t really grow up with me. I also have a young face, so even though I don’t really feel comfortable in my clothes anymore, I can get away with it. It’s pretty much t-shirt and jeans everyday, khakis and hoodies. I have a pair of Chuck Taylors to go with every outfit. I’ve been collecting pretty skirts and dresses for summer; they make me feel like a lady instead of a girl, but our climate doesn’t allow them for long. I almost never have an excuse to get dressed up, but when I do, I love it!

I can’t justify spending a lot of money on clothes. By scrimping, I can buy more! I love thrift stores, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s, and clearance racks at places like Macy’s and JC Penney. Today I’m wearing a pair of Express jeans I got at a garage sale, and a clearance sale Abercrombie T-shirt. (I saw a picture of Jamie Lynn Spears wearing the same one a few months ago. I took it out of rotation for a while because of that, but it’s back in now. It’s cute and flattering and matches my Chucks!)

Hats are from a variety of skate/surf brands… I’m not into the designer hats.
Shades are Oakley… though I often snag a random pair.
Shirts are usually underground skate/surf/urban as well as brands like Deisel, Armani, and the like, for clubbing/evening’s out.
Jeans are a mix of everything as well as shorts.
Shoes are usually Puma, Adidas, Asics, Rockport (dress).

Majority of my clothes come from www.80spurple.com and www.antiapparel.com

Right now, pretty much tank top, fitted low-neck t-shirt, jeans. Docs or Mary Janes. I’m a SAHM, I’m still nursing, and I need to be able to crawl around on the floor and not mind stuff smeared on my clothes.

I usually wear black, red, purple, and grey.

I like vintage (particularly Thirties through Fifties) and goth, and I plan to start wearing skirts again as soon as it’s reliably over freezing here, but most of my current look is uber-practical.

I mostly shop thrift store, Bluenotes, and the Gap.

Mon-Thur at work- slacks or chinos, button-down shirt. I have around 10 pairs of pants for this purpose and between 15-20 shirts. Shoes are semi-formal/casual- laced, black or brown, wingtip or captoe. All seasons but winter I’ll wear a blazer; in winter I don’t bother since I’m wearing a heavy coat already.

Fridays- nice jeans and a button-down, or white tee & henley. Hiking boots.

Weekends during the day- ‘project’ jeans (might have paint or holes), t-shirt with or without a logo, or sweatshirt. The only logo t’s I have are souveniers of places I’ve visited, and usually just a small place name on the left breast. I’m not crazy about logos and will never wear a clothing brand label, like Abercrombie or whatever.

If we go out at night it’s usually slacks or good jeans, button-down, blazer. I’m a big blazer guy.

I don’t do much clothes shopping, but when I do I try to buy quality so things last and I can continue to avoid shopping. Every couple years, after Christmas when there are sales, I’ll spend $300-400 to replace worn/outdated stuff in the closet.

I like hats but my head is shaped sort of funny, so they don’t really stay on my head and as a result I don’t wear them.

Above ~60F: Keen shoes (from Zappos), white heel-length socks, loose-fitting, knee-length solid colored cargo or walking shorts (mostly from Old Navy), Button-down short-sleeve linen or cotton shirt in solid or plaid (from a thrift shoppe, Ross, Old Navy, wherever).

Below ~60F: Keen shoes (from Zappos), white calf-length socks, loose-fitting jeans (from Ross or Old Navy), sometimes cords or casual khakis* (usually Old Navy), long-sleeved button-up cotton dress shirt in solid or stripes (JC Penny’s Stafford line, and others as I find them), and sometimes a solid-color sweater as well, if it’s very cold (I have several I like from Old Navy).

Boxer-briefs and a ribbed a-shirt underneath, if you’re curious.

*with non-white socks in these cases

M-Th - Skirts, dresses, suits, or dress pants and a shirt and blazer. Well I pretty much wear a blazer every day. No matter what I’m wearing. Heels or dress boots.

F - Jeans. Usually purchased at WalMart. And a shirt. And hiking boots or gym shoes.

Sat-Sun - See F.

Although I like looking good, I am an utterly lazy person and I have little time or money. I LOATHE shopping for clothes.

I was already a pretty boring/indifferent dresser, and then I came across The Little Brown Dress Project at this site http://www.littlebrowndress.com/ and I decided to spend even less money and thought on clothes.

I have three pairs of jeans that I cycle through and about five 3/4 sleeve tops with either boatneck or scoopneck in pink, black, and purple. That’s about it about 90% of the time. The jeans change to shorts about mid-April and sometimes I wear t-shirts. My shoes are always comfortable, either athletic or slip-on Merrill type shoes (not actual Merrills because they cost too much)
When I do buy clothes it is almost always from the thrift store. If I buy something new it is usually from Land’s End or LL Bean, because I can’t be bothered shopping around for other companies.

If I had more time and money I might put a little more effort into clothes, but they are not a priority. No matter how much time and money I had I would never bother with jewelry or accessories. Too much to fiddle with.

At work, I do the usual professional business wear; black pants or skirt, button-up collar shirts. My minor dress rebellion is that I wear my combat boots every day and usually wear more aggressive jewelry than others.

On my own time, my roommate claims my style is a sort of a riot grrl that fell in a rainbow. I usually wear above the knee skirts in either black denim or knit (I have the same skirt in about four different colors from American Apparel because it fits me perfectly - I know they get a lot of flak, but they make me look amazing), and layer designed t-shirts or solid colored tank tops. I love colors though and try to wear many. Especially turquoise, golds, purples, and deep greens. Of course, lots of black too to balance it out. I am obsessed with knee socks and have them in every stripey variation imaginable, and I wear lots of tights too. I wear colorful scarves in my hair almost every day. Shoes are either my combat boots or high top converse. For jewelry, lots of leather collars, chokers, and big, bright beads - I get most of it off etsy or through local stores.

We have a good thrift store selection here, so I shop mainly at used clothing stores that target younger people. Every summer I usually hit up the Big City for its malls, and search through places like delias, forever21, papaya and such for pieces that would suit me because they are usually pretty cheap. For work wear, I usually stick with gap/express/old navy styles because they are pretty classic, but I only buy that stuff used.

I pretty much dress the same year 'round because of the climate here being mild, but for the winter I just put on a hoodie - I have a black one and a purple/pink striped one that I love. My favorite real jacket is a mod white/black leather thing that I’ve had since high school (i.e. too long).

I don’t do fancy often, but I really enjoying dressing up. I have a lot of dresses I never wear for lack of occasion. Most of my formal dresses are rockabilly or vintage-retro style in nature. Also, probably way too much that is goth-inspired (lots of black lace and red velvet - my guilty pleasure, I never wear them out). My two favorite dresses are long (bright blue) and short brocade (red and black) cheong-sams I got at an Asian market in my mom’s town.

I live in a typical liberal college town, semi-rural, with an indie-hipster bent, and I feel like I dress pretty much like most of the townies here. A lot of us get away with dressing like we’re still in college and no one really cares. I never feel out of place or like a weirdo. We have a big hippie/folkpunk scene here, but goths are almost non-existent. We do have one lolita here that I love seeing, her clothes are always so ornate!

I’m not too judgmental about others’ clothing, but I do enjoy seeing other people’s fashion choices. Especially girls that can pull off classic and elegant vintage on an every day basis, or the girls now that are doing the super 80s style. I used to work in the same building as the Fashion department on campus, and it was always fun seeing what the students would wear. Sometimes horrible, horrible things.

My irrational fashion hatreds are: Those weird plastic slip-on shoes, those huge baggy tops parading as dresses that girls seem to think mean they can wear no pants with, and I don’t think skinny jeans look good on anyone over a size 2. I’m also a little puzzled at girls that wear those skin-hugging running tights as regular pants. It just seems sort of indecent (which means I’m getting old, I guess). I also hate flip flops with anything other than casual summer clothes - a lot of the college students here will be dressed really nice except for their friggen’ flip flops. Drives me nuts.

And how are you doing? You look gorgeous.

As for the OP’s question, my normal work-wear is black shoes, chinos, double-cuff shirt, tie, and sports jacket. Add a jumper if the weather is cold, and a Panama hat if I’m outdoors and it’s hot and sunny.

I wear jeans and a tee shirt every damn day. Well, different jeans and tee shirts on different days but they all look mostly alike. I wear nothing but white athletic socks and black shoes, either Rockports or Sketchers. And I don’t wear the same shoes two days in a row. And I don’t care what anyone thinks, either.

This is pretty much how I dress every day. Different colours of sweaters and shirts that match them (or vice versa), but that would be the generic me.

Thankfully, we have no real dress code at work. If you have to brief or go offsite, you are expected to dress professionally. Beyond that, you’re expected to know what’s appropriate.

I wear jeans, a nice top, maybe a cardigan, and sneakers. I sit in a cubicle all day, so who cares what I look like?? My clothes are clean and more or less coordinated, and they cover all the important bits. Just one more reason that I love where I work.

Interestingly enough, I dress pretty much the same way on weekends. Except in the summer - I’ll wear shorts sometimes.

Work/Church. Polo, t-shirt underneath, and jeans. Brown or black belt and socks with matching shoes.

Rest of the time: T shirt, shorts, flip flops.

Brands. Abercrombie, American Eagle, and Hollister.
