A few people on this board have mentioned that they have pet dachshunds, which lead me to thinking about the pronunciation of the word.
How do you pronounce the word “dachshund”?
(Both dachshund owners and non-dachshund owners are welcome to reply to the thread and the poll.)
A combination: DAKS-und. I didn’t make this up, this is how people around here say it. I live in New York.

Other: Gerglish DAHKS-und.
Same here. Can’t say I’ve ever heard anyone pronounce it DASH-und.
Yup, DAHKS-und. That’s how pretty much everyone in the U.S. says it, as far as I know.
Daks-hund over here as well. Hoont and Dash would get you weird looks. Actually, it’s more of a daks-ind than anything.

For those of you saying DAKS instead of DAHKS – rhymes with back instead of lock?
Pretty common in the UK. That’s how I say it.
Chalk another one up for Dahks-und. That’s the only way I’ve ever heard it pronounced, actually.

This. Around here, DAKS rhymes with DOX: I’ve heard a lot of owners refer to their dachshunds as “Doxies.”

I’ve always pronounced it “DASH-und.” Maybe it’s the Canadian way?

Multiple dachshund owner. The told me to tell you “dock-sund”.
We’re in America, after all.
I’ve never heard “DASH-und.” I live in an area with a lot of Anglicized Germans. We say “DOKS-ənd” or “DAhKh-sənd.” Like the rest of America apparently.

Docks-hund.
I’ve heard Dash-hound way too often, and it makes me cringe every time.

Docksoonndh. The ‘n’ makes the final vowel a sort of mix between “uh” and “oo” and softens the final ‘d’. I’ve heard it almost every way mentioned here, but never with a hard “t” at the end.

No, I should have said DAHKS.
