Dox-hund.
I say “daxund,” [a] as in “back” and as the [oo] in “good.” If someone around me says “Dash-” anything, though, my pronunciation changes to “Dahx-hoont,” AKA German-style but with an unfortunately obvious American accent, because I hate the way people see a “CH” near an “S” and automatically go “SH” whether it’s correct or not.
Yes, my bruschetta trauma carries over to dachshunds.
Yup, same here. DOX-hund
DASH-und is just… weird. Don’t think I have ever heard that.
Dahks-und
I know someone who calls the dash-hounds. It’s so weird.
Another vote for “dock-sund”.
I met a girl who pronounces it DASH hound. And she talked about her DASH hounds A LOT. Because she seemed to be very into the breed - may have been an actual breeder; I don’t recall- I didn’t question her about the pronunciation and just assumed it was the proper way, but it sure sounded pretentious.
This.
I’m Canadian and I used to pronounce it like that, but that could be a coincidence. I’ve since switched to the pronunciation other people are mentioning (dox-und).
Other: The American pronunciation: [ˈdɑksənd]
Dot-sun
Yep. This is what I say. I certainly don’t say it the German way (which sounds weird dropped in the middle of an American English sentence) and it’s not with a “sh” sound, either. I might sometimes say it with an /ae/, but I’m pretty sure most of the time it’s “docks-und.”
Hbns is closest to how I say it. Dock Sun. No “D” sound at the end.
Dubya Dee.
If I’m going formal, “dox-und”, like the majority of other US folks.
Me too
Silly, that’s the name of a car.
Wait. That was a serious answer? Some people call them “Datsuns”?
10% serious, yes.

I did. When I was five.
I pronounce it “DOCKS hoond”.
Side note: According to my Frankfurt friend who owns two, the Germans usually call 'em Dackel(n) instead.
Nissan!
Um, dox-hund, anyway. You know, for the dog breed. Think they’re cute as buttons.
