I’m not consistent, doing, depending on when I say it, an approximation of the German (dahks hund), a slightly different version of the English than you’ve transcribed above (dash hund), a bastardized combo of both (dax hund), or a lazy version of the German (dahks un).

Could be, that’s how I pronounce it. All though there’s also a slight “h” sound in there too, like Dash-hund.
I own an infernal, stubborn wiener dog. I’ve never ever heard anyone pronounce DASH-hund.
Normally I say DOX-un because I’m Southern and we drop the last letter off everything. If people ask me what kind of dogs I have I say a Weenie and a Collie.

DOCKS-und. If I called them Docks-hoont I’d have to put the little jackboots on them, and that’s too much trouble. Especially since they’re not my dogs.

I don’t hear many people say it REALLY German, but a sorta German, “dockshund,” is the preferred method. I’m Canadian, btw, southern Ontario.

I must admit, although I’ve pronounced it “DASH-und”, I’ve never heard anyone pronounce it “dash-hound”, with the “hound” sound in there.

Dash Hound is common in Australia. But having said that ‘Daks-und’ is not unknown either. Never hear weiner dog, because what the hell is a weiner? (That’s a joke son. I know what a weiner is, it’s just not a term that is used in Oz)
I don’t see how the pronunciation of a word can be ‘disgraceful’ :rolleyes: . You Yanks pronounce all sorts of stuff funny

Docks-und, usually. If one is being especially clever, then “teckel.” Often I translate from the German and call them “sneaky little bastards.”

It funny to me that the only pronunciation I’ve ever heard (DAHKS-und) isn’t even represented in the poll.
“DOCK-suhnd,” which is the only way I’ve ever heard it pronounced by any English speaker. Not sure what you meant by the “English way”. British, perhaps?
ETA: Now I saw a few other responses, and they agree with me (despite the slightly different ways we’re choosing to spell this same pronunciation.)

I would never get a dachshund though, they’re one of the freaks of the canine world.
