How do you pronounce "dachshund"?

Dash-hound

I meant the way an English speaker might see the word and think to pronounce it. Though considering how many English speakers don’t pronounce it that way, as evidenced by this thread, perhaps I was wrong.

Lifelong West Coast resident, and I use a similar pronunciation (basically the “German” option in the poll, without a “t” sound).

That’s when I’m not calling them “psycho stretch dogs”.

I don’t know that disgraceful is the correct word. It just seems kind of pretentious for an American to pronounce it that way - even if that is technically correct, which I don’t even think anyone has confirmed. I don’t think I’d give it a second thought if I heard, for example, an Australian  say"dash hound". I’d just chalk it up to “that’s how they say it down there” Just having trouble figuring out where an American would pick up that pronunciation.

I should’ve added that to the poll. :stuck_out_tongue:

I say dakshund, the most common pronunciation in Britain but first heard of them as “dashhounds”, I have a suspicion that pronunciation came into vogue during either WWI or II, as a result of anti German prejudice, like German Shepherds becoming Alsatians.

Featherstonehaugh.

Docks-hund…first syllable accented.

Dox-und. I’m American.

Prior to this thread, if I had heard someone say “dash-hound” and there wasn’t context readily available, such as them pointing at a nearby wiener dog, I would have had no idea what they were talking about. I have never heard that pronunciation before.

Other - more like DOX-nd.

Aussie who’s lived in UK and NZ, always heard it as Dash-hund. Funny that I spent 2 years in Germany and have no clue how it was pronounced there.

Well, apparently you too are one of the disgraceful, despicable barbarics then.

German style. Do it General Burkhalter style to get it right. Yell, “Klink, you dachshund!” for extra fun.

German style, German style
Hey weiner doggy!

Picked the second option, but I actually say dash-hound, so +1 to Other.

A combination of 1 and 2: DOCK-sund.

Datsun. As in the car make. East Baltimore/Baltimore County.

It gets better if you imagine putting small kegs of brandy on their collars and letting them loose on ski slopes.

“…Dock-sun Saves…!”
