How do you think NBA legend Chris Mullin will do coaching St Johns? (long term)

Chris Mullin has won playing at every phase of basketball. A stand out in high school, college and NBA. He was part of the 1992 Olympic Dream team with Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. He’s been a special adviser for the Sacramento Kings and general manager of the Golden State Warriors.

Now he’s returning to his alma mater to rebuild St John’s basketball program. He lead St. John’s to the 1985 Final Four. He’s deeply committed to helping his old school.

I’ve been following the story. I’ve included quite a few links to news articles. Mullin has done all the right moves to build a great team. Its a textbook example.

This guy has hired some amazing assistants. First he snags Matt Abdelmassih from Iowa State. Matt is one of the best recruiters in college basketball today. imho He’s responsible for helping turn Iowa State’s around with top recruits. Fred Hoiberg’s success as Iowa’s head coach recently got him the job coaching the Chicago Bulls. Mullinhired another recruiter Barry Rohrssen from Kentucky.

Next Chris hires Hall of Famer Mitch Richmond. His old teammate from the famous Run TMC days. All he needs now is Tim Hardaway and Run TMC will be kicking ass again. Who knows, it might happen. Hardaway is an assistant coach with Detroit Pistons.

This first season will be extremely challenging. St Johns is fielding nine new players. Yeah they are going to get beat a lot this first season. They are currently ranked bottom of the Big East. But adversity builds great teams. imho This kids will learn a lot this first season. Rookie Coach Mullin will too. But winners like Mullin won’t get their butt kicked for long. I think St John’s can win a few games this season. Even maybe an upset.

I think Mullins will get this team winning and in the NCAA Tournament by his third season. Thats if he doesn’t lose players to the NBA. Give these kids two seasons playing for Mullin and I think St Johns could be ranked in the top three within the Big East. I say that not just because of Mullin. Its the staff he’s put together. Recruiting is everything in college basketball. We saw Iowa State rise to the top and now Matt Abdelmassih and Barry Rohrssen will get St John’s the best talent. They already recruited some good talent for this season and the guys they add next year will complete the team. imho

What do you think? Can Mullin resurrect St John’s into a powerhouse again?
