If anybody listened to Rush today, you’d know that he was in the Dominican Republic to listen to Karl Rove talk at length about past American Presidents. Actually I’m sure he also played golf, but I didn’t have time to listen to the whole show today (maybe my husband will get the podcast and we’ll listen tonight).
I found this in an article on the subject on msnbc :
*"It is generally not illegal under Florida law for a physician to prescribe medication in a third party’s name if all parties are aware and the doctor documents it correctly, said Mike Edmondson, a spokesman for the state attorney in Palm Beach County.
<…>
This latest case may simply be dismissed if prosecutors can confirm with Limbaugh’s doctor that the prescription was indeed for Limbaugh, said Kendall Coffey, a former U.S. attorney in Florida.
“It’s perhaps a little embarrassing but not highly incriminating,” Coffey said.
In addition, possession of Viagra is in a “completely different universe than a matter that would involve Schedule Two (controlled) substances such as OxyContin” Coffey added."*
Geez, to watch some folks in this thread, the ideal outcome is for him to get busted for something, anything, even if it isn’t actually illegal. If erectile dysfunction is involved, so much the better. Because we all know how much fun it is to jeer men who can’t get it up. Right?
As for the people talking about unmarried sex, if you’re talking about the “Christian Right”, of course they’re going to say it’s wrong and bad because they’re coming from a Fundamentalist perspective. But most non-Fundamentalist conservatives I know (and yes they do exist) frown on broken marriage vows; in the absence of any vows, and assuming nobody gets hurt, they believe people should mind their own business. The problem is that a lot of right-wing Christians forget that Jesus said “My kingdom is not of this world” and think to implement it through the legal system somehow (hat tip to a recent last-page editorial in TIME magazine).
I do care whether he broke the law. I recently smacked a friend down on Livejournal for crowing over Ann Coulter’s illegal voting thing. Because after all, she’s a conservative, and only conservatives ever pull that crap. Right? I told him about the fiasco that was the last Gubernatorial race in Washington - the break-in at the Republican headquarters, the dead people who voted in King County, the people who double-voted, the ballots that showed up in previously-certified-as-empty voting machines, the ballots to (largely conservative) overseas military personnel that were mailed too late for them to even receive by the cutoff date, let alone return, the ballots that were being “fixed” by Democrat-side ballot-counters using White-Out, the ballots that kept turning up here and there by dribs and drabs for weeks after the certified end-date for all ballots…all of which HAD to be counted despite being late because “Every vote counts!”…the two recounts, as these ballots continued to show up mysteriously, after the last of which the Democratic candidate FINALLY pulled ahead by less than 200 votes, and won the state…
It’s not just the Republicans. My friend at least had the good grace to admit that illegal activity is illegal activity, and should be smushed wherever found. If it’s Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh, hey, smush 'em good. If it’s the head of voting records in Washington State for violating god knows how many laws, hey, smush 'em good.
I listen to Rush. If he’s guilty under Florida law, then he should pay the penalty. But if he’s not, then I hope somebody here will eat a few words.
