You’ve been paying exactly the right amount of attention. Milo Yiannopoulos is a journalist/lecturer/dickhead who has recently become notorious for going around college campuses worshipfully praising Donald Trump and saying various things that a lot of people (not unreasonably) consider bigoted. In any sane world he would either be debated and his ideas debunked or politely ignored. Unfortunately, it seems that among left-wing college campus activists sanity is an increasingly rare commodity. Instead of responding to him in a mature way (or not responding at all, which would be even better), they do their damnedest to turn every single one of his otherwise forgettable lectures into a shit-bukkake of autistic screeching. They sneak into his lectures and use the heckler’s veto to shout him down, they storm the stage and snatch the microphone out of his hand, they form human walls and block the entrances to his campus venues, they set off the fire alarms, they pepper-spray up his fans, and recently at UC Berkeley they damn near burnt the whole place down.
The upshot is that Milo, who would otherwise be beneath the notice of reasonable people, has become infamous. There are (it seems) countless people who treat him like Hitler 2.0 and turn into frothing, histrionic retards whenever his name is mentioned. Indeed, they do so with such alacrity and reliability that it’s hard to dispel the notion that they get some weird kick out of it. There are plenty of such people in this dumbfuck shitpile of a thread, if you’re looking for examples.
The fact that you don’t know who he is reflects well on you. It indicates that you have your priorities in order and don’t allow yourself to be distracted by stupid internet bullshit. Well done. You’re a rare breed these days
Blaming his awfulness on being raped isn’t right, either. I can maybe blame that for why he has mixed up ideas about pedophilia, or even being anti-gay. But IG doesn’t make you awful and unable to empathize. It doesn’t make you a troll.
I known several people who were raped at a young age and they are decent people. There’s no causal relationship.
I do hope this teaches him. Words can hurt, just like they are hurting him. May e he can learn basic compassion.
:dubious: Cite that the folks who “damn near burnt the whole place down” at UC Berkeley were actually college students?
Because Berkeley admins and local police seem to think otherwise:
If you hold the personal opinion that college student activists in general are giving Yiannopoulus too much attention, that’s one thing. But if you’re claiming that it was college student activists who were responsible for the violence at UC Berkeley, you need to back up that claim with a cite.
This will be an unpopular sentiment here but… I don’t find John Oliver funny, like at all.
Bill Maher has a much better and more engaging show, especially when there are people on the panel that disagree. But I think more people favor the kind of show John Oliver runs, and favor his humor. Milquetoast fluff.
Milo’s fans are already trying to redirect by calling attention to George Takei’s tale of teen romance with his camp counselor. This shows just how low they’ll go in order to pretend what Milo said wasn’t creepy and disgusting. Claiming liberals would applaud it if a liberal had said it is all they have. There’s no excuse, so redirect.
Milo’s body language is so creepy, I don’t know how anyone decent can stand to be in the same room as him. Like he’s going out of his way to go out of his way to shiftily squirm and avoid eye contact. I don’t watch many movies…maybe he’s emulating some villain.
I would like to suggest to people on my side of the aisle that this is a wonderful lesson about embracing despicable people. If you embrace someone loathsome because it’s a stick in the eye of your opponents, eventually that loathsome embrace will give you a massive case of the political clap.
Surely, in the interest of fairness, we must hold all liberals accountable for anything that they have ever said or muttered in their entire lives, and if we find anything objectionable, then these people should rightfully be on the receiving end of a well planned and well financed character assassination scheme, and everything should be done to end their careers and bring them down. Every last one of them.
I consume a lot of youtubers that think Milo is the greatest thing ever, like Sargon of Akkad who has become increasingly deranged since he backed Trump over Hillary in his hatred and rage against social justice warriors and seemingly anything they would prefer in life.
He posted some screenshot of a board that was mildly interesting, someone that was on a jornolist type board leaked that there would be a massive dumping of anti Milo oppo on Monday. That’s kind of what happened. They reportedly had this for awhile and did not bother because they considered him a small fry.
But Milo has been on the rise, many were reportedly furious that Bill Maher had him on his show because their preference is to deplatform and shut out such views. I remember his appearance video was trending at number 1 on youtube and I’m sure that made even more people furious with him and Bill by extension for “elevating” someone they find repugnant. And now the hammer fell.
I can’t say I am sad to see Milo be diminished, but I’d prefer his ideas were tossed out in the public mind vs this sort of disqualification move. Jeremy Scahil backed out of the Bill Maher show because Milo was coming on, and I’m sure his little weasel types are happy as could be right now.
And the Republicans would have voted him president.
Look - Milo is the victim of sexual abuse. That’s why, for example, this liberal here is hoping that he can get help and find peace.
Regardless, Milo’s attempts to normalize sexual abuse, while despising feminists for trying to prevent sexual abuse, is a deeply toxic and damaging behavior, for both himself and for society. It’s not unreasonable that companies like Simon & Schuster want to distance himself.
It’s also not surprising that Milo’s homophobic friends are running for the hills, either.
But there’s no getting around it - Milo himself is the source of his destruction. His self-hatred is abundantly obvious when he talks about homosexuality. Honestly, it’s not surprising that he’s inflicted all this self-sabotage just as he was starting to see mainstream success.
Kimstu, can I ask…do you get some kind of commission every time you use :dubious:? You seem to do it in nearly every post and it’s fucking irritating.
Anyway, I can’t say for absolute cast-iron certainty whether or not each and every one of the black-bloc thugs who tore up Berkeley were actually students. I can, however, say that some of them were. Here, for example, is an article which opens with an interview with a Berkeley student who admitted taking part in the black bloc vandalism.
I can also say that there were other students on campus who, even if they didn’t actually take part in the black bloc vandalism (although they may very well have done), certainly didn’t have a problem with it. Indeed, they endorsed it. Here is an article written by a Berkeley student entitled ‘In Defence of the Violence at Berkeley’, and here is another article written by another Berkeley student saying that people who criticise the black bloc violence should (what else?) “check their privilege”.
But let’s be generous. Let’s assume, purely for the sake of argument, that which we know not to be true: that none of the black bloc rioters were Berkley students and that no Berkley students endorsed them. All that proves is that it’s not just left-wing campus activists who act like morons when threatened with the terrifying prospect of some unserious, half-bright internet troll doing words at them for an hour or two. Left-wing non-campus activists act like morons, too. So what? All it proves is that Yiannopoulos derangement syndrome isn’t just confined to college campuses.
What exactly does that mean? That he voluntarily resigned for the good of the company? That he was paid a significant amount of money to leave? Or was he told “if you don’t resign you will be fired”?
What’s the financial situation with Simon and Schuster? How much of the $250,000 advance will he receive, keep? Did he get part of it when he signed the contract and the rest when he submits the final manuscript or what?
He’s not that old, after all. You probably wouldn’t have heard of him four years ago.
He was an internet loudmouth who latched onto the Gamergate nastiness and by dint of being the Nasty of Nasties, got picked up by Breitbart. Gamergate started as just the usual fuckwitted online misogyny but Breitbart and conservatives like Christina Hoff Sommers and Bill Kristol recognized it as a source of anti-feminist rage and harnessed that energy against the Hillary Clinton campaign we all saw coming three years ago. That’s how Breitbart writer Steve Bannon started oozing his way into politics, too, via supporting Milo and ginning up anti-feminism at Breitbart.com. The rest is history.
Many homosexuals are confused and troubled people. That’s nothing new.
Milo obviously has some issues with his homosexuality, just like plenty of other homosexuals do. And let’s not even mention the transgendered. Many of them are seriously confused, basically mentally ill.
Milo’s sexual preferences are the least interesting thing about Milo in my view at least. I couldn’t care less about his sexuality.
I admire his political opinions on a whole range of topics.
You keep acting like the guy was just some Internet troll who no one was listening to until liberals got upset at him. That’s just not the case.
It’s not even really accurate to call him a troll. He’s a provocateur, yes. But he isn’t just saying whatever will make people upset at him. He is pushing forth a political movement–the alt-right. He is a sort of leader in that movement, in as much as they can be said to have leaders.
So, yes, of course liberals would get upset at him. What he was saying was truly awful, and people were actually buying it. He created group harassment campaigns against quite a few people because they dared be anti-racist or whatever. He championed death threats as freedom of speech.
These type of people do not just go away because people ignore them. And ignoring them doesn’t prevent them from getting more and more followers.
The correct response is exactly what happened. Liberals got upset at him, and used the tools at their disposal to attack him. Without doing anything illegal, they tried to limit his influence. Debating him was pointless, since he didn’t come to his positions rationally, nor did his followers. So, instead, they appealed to the decency of others to try and get him discredited and shut down his ability to be influential.
And the end result appears to be that it worked. The guy even lost his job at Breitbart. He’s lost his book deal. He’s lost his influence that he worked so hard to build up in the shadows, before liberals were paying attention.
In short, liberals attacked him not because they got some sort of perverse pleasure out of it, but because it works. Not taking these people seriously doesn’t.
DNFTT only works if no one is listening to them. A troll that can get people on his side needs other methods to stop him.
