Yes, exactly. There are some horrible mean, nasty, petty, hypersensitive little trolls who do awful things like doxx people. Some of these people are even aligned with social justice movements. In theory, “SJW” could be used to describe them, but in practice, it tends to mean “somebody who said something progressive me and my internet buddies don’t like.”
Basically, it would be a much more valid descriptor of people like those internet tough guy feminists who organize harassment and doxing campaigns (e.g. TERFs) if the people who used the term didn’t tend to be mean, nasty, petty, hypersensitive little trolls who do awful things like doxx people.
I do agree with Milo on some things, but from the sound of it his banning was justified. Evidently he either posted or reposted falsified tweets attributed to Leslie Jones, which is against Twitter’s TOS. Leslie Jones has certainly said some bigoted shit, but people should limit themselves to quoting bigoted shit she actually said, not the bigoted shit she didn’t say.
Among other things, his screencapping and retweeting incendiary fake tweets that his followers made up and pretended Jones had sent, and his downplaying of the harassment barrage by his followers with the dismissive “everybody gets hate mail”. Do you need cites for those very well-documented actions? If so, I’ll be happy to provide them.
I don’t see how you can even pretend that Yiannopoulous doesn’t support and encourage his followers’ engagement in nasty harassment. It’s the prime reason he has followers at all. Has he ever even asked his followers not to barrage his targets with hateful messages, or suggested that online harassment is a bad thing, or anything of the sort?
AFAICT Yiannopoulous is indeed the chief cheerleader of bigoted harassment, complete with megaphone and pompoms. It appears that at least as far as Twitter is concerned, though, those days are now over.
:dubious: Then you must not have been following this situation at all in the news. Did it really sound implausible to you that Yiannopoulos did those things? Anyway, here are the cites for those very well documented actions, including the requested screen shots.
Tithonus, MY is an asshole. If he were an asshole on the left, I’d not support him, because I don’t support assholes. There are plenty of conservatives who don’t cheer on assholes on their side, who don’t take pleasure in watching them be assholes to their political opponents.
Yeah, people have been pointing out that nobody wants to ban Christina Hoff-Summers, despite sharing most of Milo’s viewpoints, because she’s actually quite cordial to people who disagree with her.
I agree, Social Justice Warriors aren’t “mythical.” There’s tons and tons of them (us) out there. A “Social Justice Warrior” is, literally, anyone who cares at all about racism, sexism, or homophobia, to absolutely any degree. It’s not just the twits making fools of themselves at college speaking engagements. It’s not even just used to describe people who complain. The new Ghostbusters movie is derided as a product of SJWs for absolutely no other fact than it stares women instead of men. It’s used to attack people for including gay or trans characters in video games. It’s used to attack anyone who makes something that’s not aimed squarely at white, straight men.
“Social Justice Warrior” as a pejorative comes directly from the worst parts of the internet. It’s also straight out of gaming culture, which you’ve said you’re not really connected to, so it’s understandable that you’d be unaware of its origins and actual meanings. But the term is inextricably tied to racism, sexism, and some of the most appalling homophobia imaginable. If you just want to mock stupid college kids, go for it. That’s pretty much what they’re for. But you should really find a different term to use, because the one you’ve settled on is carrying a lot more meaning than you seem to intend.
Most of the time he’s just an unapologetic, hateful bigot, and people wig out at that. But good for you, standing up for that kind of guy and laughing at his targets.
God you’re a fucking terrible person.
A nazi vogon.
Thanks, that was really helpful!
And a gay pride parade is not the way to do it. Showing them the error of their ways by parading explicit out-and-proud homosexuality in front of them? How well do you think that’s going to work out? It’s not a good idea. It’s not the right way to address this. All it does is piss off the potentially violent but politically impotent bigots.
He’ll make some noise, he’ll get some short term attention, but really he won’t be able to send the storms he has in the past. Twitter was a conducter’s stage for him and without it he’s just braying on Breitbart and hoping people will list his stuff on twitter. It just won’t work do to what he wants, which is to slander and pick on people he thinks might make easy targets.
He’s making the rounds of radio stations at the RNC tarding it up and playing the martyr. Saying how Twitter was happy to keep ISIS accounts and tweets of people saying to kill cops but he got booted because of his “movie review”.
He’s also saying how this will only get him more fans and will make him stronger and faster and smarter and that ultimately even though Twitter is a dumb dumb this is a good thing for him.
He’s basically Ann Coultering. Saying outrageous controversial stuff just so people will pay attention to him to see what outrageous controversial stuff he’ll say next. I suspect a book or two from him real soon.
It is amazing how much you can potentially earn when you totally abandon anything resembling integrity, and just pile on all the malice you can dish out.
As a feminist anti-GGer and a Tori Amos fan, it was an EPIC week for me when Kluwe whipped out those poems. A lot of them are straight up Tori Amos lyrics, butchered. Just like how you’d expect fridge poetry played with by a frothing misogynist to look.
