How does one eat a pommegranite?

My 5 year old daughter saw one at the store and just had to have it. Now that she has it, how the heck does she eat it? Just the seeds? Eat it like an apple? Peel it?

Not eaten without some diffuculty.

How i did it was peel the outside, then separate all the “jewels” from the membranes that run through it.
Then just consume the tart little things,i just swallowed the seeds.
Hey think of it as a fun memory, but if you’re like me you won’t want to make it a staple.

Did this last night.

Get a large bowl

1: Slice a few areas of the external rind until you can pull the fruit apart. Gently break the fruit into several pieces and put in bowl.

2: Gently pull as many jewel clusters as you can away from the rind. Keep doing this (takes a few minutes) until the jewels are free from the rind.

3: Fill the bowl with water and the smaller bits of the rind mixed in with the jewels will float to the top and the jewels will mostly stay submerged. Pick off the rind pieces and drain in a colander.

Eat!

Oh and no light clothing. It stains like crazy.

And make sure you’re not in Hades when you eat it.

  1. Fill bathtub with nice warm water.
  2. Put child in tub.
  3. Hand over cut-up pomegranate.

No you can eat it there, just make sure you’re not a seed swallower like me.

That came out all wrong…i await the jokes

dogshit, please email me (lynnbodoniathotmaildotcom] or TubaDiva (Tubadivaataoldotcom) to change your name. Your current name is unacceptable. Please provide about three different names, in case your first choice or two is already taken.

For the Straight Dope

So true. So true.

Also make sure you wont be taking said child anyplace where a red stained beard since it stains skin too.

I always enjoy just cutting the thing into quarters and then using my lips to pull out the jewels as I have learned they are called in this thread. It pleases me to do so.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

I had one just the other day. They don’t taste all that great but I still really like em. I guess its that feeling after hours of stumbling through bits of the skin and finding only small amounts of the fruit you suddenly rip off a piece to find the motherload. Hundreds of little red things! Its like treasue hunting! Anyhow my technique is as follows:

  1. Change into dark clothes.
  2. Get ready a bowl and some paper towels
  3. Place fruit in one hand and bring to mouth.
  4. Use your other hand to get some paper towels under your chin and bite into a piece of the flesh.
  5. Bite down and tear some off and place ripped off piece in bowl.
  6. Wipe up any juice that spills out.
  7. Some of the seeds should be exposed so eat em.
  8. With hands or teeth gently pull away at the skin in search of more seeds.
  9. After a while of ripping and tearing you should start to come across a lot of seeds concentrated in some areas so eat em and move on the the rest.
  10. Continue process until the fruit has been torn apart and all seeds eaten. Disponse of the excess. Repeat if nessisary.

Alternate question:

How does one spell pomegranate?

Before you jump on me, consider the fact that I’ve just made this thread findable to anyone searching for it later who uses the correct spelling.

They are usually relatively expensive here in the UK, but they were on offer the other day, so I bought a bag of them. I can’t be bothered to try to eat them as a fruit, so I cut them in half and squeezed them over a bowl; all the ‘jewels’ come out, some of them releasing their juice - when you have done this for all of them, you mash up the contents of the bowl with your hands or a potato masher, then strain and drink the juice, which is very refreshing.

Boy, this SDMB is great. I bought a pomegranite (sp?) from Harris Teeter this morning and didn’t know how to eat it. I’d seen a Nigella Bites episode on the Food Channel last night and her method was to carefully slice the fruit in half and beat on the outside of the fruit to dislodge the seed clusters into a bowl. She then picked up the clusters and distributed the seeds into a dish she’d made.

Smash. Relish juices (sucking of seeds is permitted). Discard.

Hey Astro, I also had pomengranate last night! LOVE 'em.

Change into old dark shirt, or be naked.
Put on latex gloves (I keep a box full of the them for all kinds of things)
Get large bowl
partially slice the fruit, then pull it the rest of the way apart.
Eat.
Hey ** Lynn, ** just out of curiosity, would PuppyPoop be ok? I kinda like that one.

Roll on counter with forearm, hard, for a couple minutes.

Poke hole in skin with toothpick.

Suck.

Repeat.

Repeat.

Repeat. (etc)

Just so you all know, I bought a pomegranate tonight just because this thread reminded me about how good they are! My SO has never even heard of them, let alone tasted them, so I get to convert yet another person (all my friends eat them now because of me  ). The grocery store we went to had a little pamphlet in the same bin that explains what they are, and how to go about eating one. I think I’ll have it with breakfast tomorrow…yummy!

Cut in quarters. Bend rind so clusters of jewels are split out and exposed. Use teeth to pop out jewels into mouth (sans pith). Crush jewels in mouth. Swallow juice. Spit out seeds. Repeat.
