How does spotify count plays? (or am I really the first person to ever listen to this?)

So I’m listening to an album (Kid Bangham’s ‘Somebody’s Got to Suffer’) on Spotify. Half the tracks show only between 1000-2000 plays, but half of them show zero. Even after I listen to them, the counter doesn’t change to 1. So what would explain what I’m seeing here? Anyone know how these numbers get counted, how often they update, etc?
(I’d never heard of this guy either til a friend recommended him)

Spotify says that they update the play count daily, so your play should get tracked by tomorrow.

Your stats update once a day at approximately 3 PM EST / 8 PM UTC. We count days based on the UTC timezone. So if you release a track at 7 PM EST, you won’t see any stats for that release day because it’s already 12 AM UTC.

A track has to be played for at least 30 seconds (and needs to be 30+ seconds long) before it counts. So if people bounce off a song in the first 29 seconds, it won’t count the attempts.

I’ve also come across a few artists with super low track play counts, even zero, and was a little skeptical that I’m the first person to ever engage with that song on Spotify. Maybe something gets glitchy or it doesn’t reflect counts well on the low end.

Maybe yet another way they’re screwing over artists.

Well I just went back and looked at it several days after. All those songs still show zero. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a play count of only 1 or 2 digits, but they must exist.
