I was listening to the Dr. Dean Edell show today (in my market we only get the “best of” shows which come on Sunday afternoons) and a caller described the following situation (to the best of my recollection):
He was having sex and suffered an extremely painful injury to his penis. The penis was bent at nearly a 90 degree angle and he said that he lost about a cup of blood. He went to the ER and they basically prescribed ice and rest, and said to see what it was like in a couple of days. Well, now it’s six days later and his srotum is turning black, and his penis is extremely swollen (not sure if it is also black). In addition, there are urilogical issues of an undefined nature (he said that he thought that he had damaged his urethra, but he didn’t state why).
Dr. Dean said that optimally there would be specialist intervention within 72 hours of the injury. He said that he wasn’t aware of any studies on outcomes when the period to treatment was greater than this. In addition, he said that many researchers believe that penile trauma is a primary cause of Pyroni’s disease (in nursing school last semester we briefly discussed this condition involving an abnormal curvature of the penis, but I seem to recall them saying that the etiology was undefined).
So what type of sex is associated with penile injury? The closest that I have come to this is probably with my wife on top and bouncing around. Is there a specific sexual position that poses a greater, defined risk of this occuring? Also, if this should happen how do you get the ER to take you seriously so that you don’t end up with tissue necrosis?
