I think I got that beat. I scrolled back, and when I posted back then, I checked on Google Maps that I’m living 650 meters from the place I was born. I didn’t check this whole old thread if I was the closest, though.
Forgot to mention that I’m still in the same state.
16.55 miles now. [If I use my first house in Cleveland]
A year ago it would have been 775.25 miles (from NE Florida).
2,339 miles if you walk (it’s a straighter line than driving). At most, I’ve lived 6,130 miles away. The farthest I’ve traveled from there is 9,410 miles.
About 20 miles (by Google Maps with highways turned off, not as-the-crow-flies) from the Chicago hospital where I was born. The building’s still there but the hospital isn’t. I’ve been slowly but surely living farther away each time I (or my family) moved.
Interesting… there seem to be people who ONLY judge distances by time.
“The folks’ cabin isn’t far. Two an’ a half hours up the Interstate, three on the weekends.”
If you ask them how many miles, they’d have to look it up… but they wouldn’t.
“It’s two hours over the river, a left at Hooterville, then an hour through the woods to Grandmother’s house.”
I made it an easy afternoon’s drive away from “home”, but that’s from a red suburb to a dark blue University town. Huge distance!
Y’know who’s the closest? Most of my high school reunion! I was amazed at how many friends are living within a mile or two of their childhood homes Or in them.
(To be honest, I felt just a wee bit superior…)
Not to mention apps.
About 450 miles from my birth city of Atlanta, Ga.
Almost identical coordinates for me, although the hospital was closed a couple of years ago, and they are trying to figure what to do with a massive structure from the 1890s.
Google Maps says 644 miles, driving distance 794 miles (760 if I take a shortcut through Canada).
In a straight line from my house to the hospital, 10.24 miles.
But apparently I was already halfway out when Dad pulled up to the hospital.
Google says it’s 2,672 miles from Los Angeles to my current Maryland abode.
Given the OP, that’s obviously far from the longest.
2.4 miles according to map quest. That would be the house I lived in when born. Hospital would be about 20 miles.
Some surprising variations here between “very far” and “very close”. I’m in the more intermediate “not very far” category – about 300 miles from where I was born. A little closer than the 400 miles when I first left home and went to college. Most of the job opportunities I’ve had – taken or not – would have left me in the same general area of east-central Canada or eastern US, except for one that would have moved me to Silicon Valley. I still wonder if I made the right decision on that one.
Mine is kinda in-between too. I don’t know what hospital I was born in, but from the town where I was born to the town where I live now is about 400 miles.
I’ve moved around a lot, and at one point it was 5,600 miles.
Nor did I, but from 2008 to 2014 my wife and I lived less than 1km from the hospital in which we were born, and prior to that she lived 500m away for about 15 years. We are now about 9 miles away.
