Mr. Enfield, you are missing the wider point. Starving Artist is also a sack of semi-sentient shit (and like Humpy may be too stupid to actually lie), but he watches enough Alex Jones to know that shutting down the government is a good thing … as long as the feds keep their filthy hands off his Medicare, Social Security, and his military. National parks? Financial regulation? Environmental protection? State department and trade negotiators? Shut down everything and let the Free Market work its magic.
This is why the GOP may win its “game of chicken.” Democrats have a sense of responsibility and want to avoid chaos. For the GOPsters, “governance” is just about stealing money with both hands while behaving like 12-year old sadistic bullies toward thoughtful Americans, posterity, America’s honor, and the rest of the world.

The 2013 shutdown was absolutely the fault of the Republicans. Note that in 2013 the Republicans had a majority in the House, Democrats in the Senate.
Republicans: We won’t pass a budget with you, unless you dismantle the health care program you spent a year roaming the country promoting and years fighting for in Congress, finally got passed, is the only major policy difference between this administration and Bush Jr, and was pushed so much by the President we’ve literally put his name on it. Millions of Americans will be denied healthcare coverage, and millions more will continue to be denied care on the basis of pre-existing conditions, Oh, and you’ll also be committing political suicide.
Democrats: No.
Republicans: Do you see these unreasonable Democrats! They never want to work with us on a bipartisan compromise!
Democrats: But we never even tried for single-payer, we abandoned a public option without a fight, and our health plan was from the beginning a conservative idea crafted by The Heritage Foundation and implemented by Mitt Romney in Massachusetts.
Republicans: Obstructionists!
As for the current shutdown - it’s absolutely the GOP’s fault. They control the House, the Senate, and the Presidency. The fact that they can’t get their shit together enough to vote together on anything is their problem. If they weren’t taking hostages by yanking healthcare from 9 million children (defunding CHIP which was previously widely supported by both parties for helping kids of working-poor families not, well, die) and 800,000 working American residents who grew up as children of undocumented immigrants (DACA), maybe they could have got some Democrats to vote for their budget despite all the bullshit that’s in it.
Some of the blame DOES lie with the Democrats this time though, because they’re fucking shitty negotiators. You don’t go to the table demanding just the two things you have to have - CHIP and DACA. You demand ten things, then let the other side negotiate downward. Then they can declare victory, which is the only thing Trump cares about, and the GOP gets to tell the voters all the ludicrous liberal shit they blocked.
Meanwhile 9 million kids don’t lose health insurance, thousands of them don’t die, and we don’t kick 800,000 people out of the U.S. to go to countries they’ve never seen to be homeless and jobless, and wreck our economy in the process by removing their businesses, buying power, and labor from our own economy.
