There is something to that. If it was going to be on July 4, I’d say just let it be. But the midterms will be over and the Republicans will be in full retreat. Any political repercussions of being perceived as being anti-military will be short lived.
Stop being so over-confident about the midterms. And we all need to stop talking about how the November “blue wave” is going to make everything better. All this is doing is motivating the Trump base. I’m concerned it’s going to be Nov 2016 all over again.
Not directed specifically to you, BobLibDem, but generally to all the LibDems out there.
Looks like Trump’s White House staff tried to protect one of their own, accused by both of his ex-wives of domestic violence: https://www.cnn.com/2018/02/07/politics/rob-porter-white-house-who-knew/index.html
There is some truth to that. Republicans will return to the roost like they always do. But I cannot imagine Democratic intensity going down between now and November. We have to fight for every seat in every state. I don’t think we’re being overconfident about a blue wave, but we’re seeing every day more evidence that a blue wave is absolutely vital to preserve democracy.
I think these uniforms look fine (on the right person) and match the prime characteristic of the administration perfectly.
Surely the right tack is to repeatedly note how the troops will be HARMED by a parade–which would require a massive diversion of military resources from needed areas into Keeping Trump Happy.
Some estimates of the proposed parade’s costs hover around $22 million. That’s an unconscionable amount to siphon away from the welfare and readiness of the troops!
So if Trump actually cares about the troops-------then he should pay for the parade himself.
#LetTrumpPay
You actually trust that deadbeat fucker to pay?
Of course not. The parade will take place only if he pays in advance.
He really, really, really needs to have phalanxes of goose-stepping soldiers saluting him as they pass, followed by gigantic missiles and tanks ripping up the streets of DC. Because that’s the ONLY thing that will stop everyone, here and around the world, from laughing at him…as we are all doing pretty much non-stop, currently.
He NEEDS that parade.
So, he’ll pay. (Seriously, $22 million is chump change considering what he’s raking in now.)
Trump cares about the troops about as much as he cares about law enforcement officers.
Or anyone besides himself.
Probably more like this.
Look how much he wastes flying to mar-a-lago all the time. Loyal trumpists don’t care.
It’s one aspect of all this that I just don’t get. I understand that some people agree with the nonsense he spouts – the completely ignorant view is a popular position to take on many topics.
But why aren’t his supporters annoyed by how much money he wastes, why he hasn’t released his tax returns etc?
The parade would not be about Trump honoring and paying tribute to the troops, it would be about the troops honoring and paying tribute to Trump. Whether they, as individuals, wanted to or not. And it would be politicized and Trump would talk like the troops were all his biggest supporters.
And that’s my problem with it. I’m all in for parades to honor veterans. I was invited to be in the NYC parade a few years ago ( couldn’t do it because of vacation). But I like hanging out and talking with my local wounded vets and I do it frequently- that’s why they invited me to ride with them.
And I think a better use of the Trump parade money would be veterans health care. These guys really need it. But what do I know, I’m just a local woman who gives these guys someone to talk to. Apparently if I really supported the troops I’d hurl insults at war widows and John McCain instead.
What? Waste all that money on pills, prostheses, wheelchairs, crutches, equipment, rehab techs, counselors, lab work, support groups? Now you’re just being silly. How would any of that stuff help donald thump?
Extrapolating from people I’ve known to support similar dudes, there were two distinct groups:
- some people hate ‘the elite’, ‘academia’, ‘the politicians’, etc. and are automatically against them. If ‘the elite’ say something is wrong, then it is automatically right.
- some people wish they were themselves in a position to waste so much public money. In their view, public money doesn’t belong to everybody; it belongs to The Government, a faceless entity which exists only to screw people and be robbed as much as possible.
Estopa’s third record is called ‘¿la calle es tuya?’, “is the street yours?” They say that they were walking down the street and watched an old man berate a teenager who’d been grafitting a Stop sign. The kid shot back “what, is the street yours?” and the old man said “yes! Mine, and yours, and hers, and theirs! It is everybody’s! The street is everybody’s living room! Would you do that to your mother’s living room? Then don’t do it to ours!”
Some people realize that stealing from the government is stealing from all of us. Some people reckon it’s putting one up on The Man.
There’s a thread in this forum that has ample evidence to the contrary.
In regard to the parade thing, it’s galling to think the big buffoon might actually get what he wants, but it is by no means the worst thing he’s doing right now.
Which is why I’m interested to see that this seems to be getting push-back by many Republicans, including talking heads on Fox News. Apparently this, finally, is over-stepping the line for them?
It’s not the most dictatorial thing he’s done.
It’s not the biggest waste of money he’s proposed.
It’s not his greatest insult to the military.
It’s not the most egotistical thing he’s done.
It’s not the most un-American thing he’s done.
It’s not even the dumbest thing he’s done.
But apparently it has just enough of all those elements that a good many Republicans can’t swallow it.
Interesting observation. What do you suppose is it about the parade that’s pushing The Pubs’ hot buttons?
The PARADE bill was introduced to block Trump using federal funds for his little parade.
Yes, it’s an acronym–Preventing the Allocation of Resources for Absurd Defense Expenditures.
Copy the French?
