The Trump admin is considering a proposal to deny citizenship or green cards to legal immigrants, if the immigrant has received any form of public welfare, including getting health insurance through Obamacare. The proposal, being spearheaded by (surprise!) Stephen Miller, is still being worked out, but:
No, that can’t be right. I’ve been assured multiple times that Republicans only objection to certain immigrants is that they’re here illegally. If they’d waited their turn and gone through the legal process of coming to America they’d be welcomed with open arms.

Not how its done. The prosecutor simply turns and walks back to his table, saying something like “No further questions”. Then the lead defense attorney commits seppuku, and the second defense attorney moves for a suspension of the proceedings for six months while the floor is mopped up.
I just wrote snail-mail letters to the OMB and to the sec of Homeland Security:
"I am writing to urge you to reject the proposed policy change regarding legal immigrants who are hoping to become US citizens. The proposed change would deny citizenship to anyone who have ever used, or whose household members have ever used, programs such as children’s health insurance, food stamps and other benefits.
As immigration lawyers and advocates have stated, “any policy forcing millions of families to choose between the denial of status and food or health care would exacerbate serious problems such as hunger, unmet health needs, child poverty and homelessness, with lasting consequences for families’ wellbeing and long-term success and community prosperity.”
In my opinion, this change would only discourage hardworking newcomers (who contribute so much good to our economy and culture) from following the proper, legal paths toward residency and eventual citizenship.

This is terrifying for us. My wife is a permanent resident and we wanted to push for her citizenship next year.
AND for the first time in my life I took “advantage” of unemployment and Obama Care last year while transitioning to a freelance software developer after working for over a decade as one in a regular 9 to 5.
So now we could be in serious trouble.
I hate that fucking, vampire looking, INCEL, racist sack of shit that is Miller with every fiber of my being.
Aside: Why is Obamacare being lumped in with “public welfare”? Don’t people understand that Obamacare is a directive for people to buy **PRIVATE **health insurance from **PRIVATE **health insurance companies? Obamacare is NOT a government health insurance program and never has been.
This is apart from the pure Republican evil behind this attack on legal residents.
Putting aside the issue of Obamacare, collecting welfare or unemployment or social security are all perfectly legal. So Republicans are trying to enact a program of targeting people haven’t broken any laws but did something that Republicans don’t like.
Except this is gone past the point of being just the topic for jokes. The Republican Party is real and is actually doing these things. I worry that we’re seeing a dictatorship being created as we sit here.
