This kind of thing is something my 79-year-old father with dementia might do. Dementia is not just forgetting what happened yesterday - it’s losing ordinary knowledge of all kinds, being unable to process what is going on around you, and filling in the blanks with “memories” of things that never happened. Personality changes too - if you try to explain to them this or that didn’t happen, or what it is they don’t seem to know, they get angry because they KNOW they are right, and they don’t understand why you are opposing them.
Trump apparently not knowing what color the stripes on the flag are reminds me of my dad indiginantly claiming he has never heard the terms “am and pm” or what a first cousin is; or a friend’s dad angrily scolding a waitress that he has never heard of a baked potato.
Trump is an asshole and a bully and always has been, but he’s an asshole with dementia. He doesn’t have the mental capacity to shop for shoes, much less be Commander in Chief. Congress needs to remove him for this if no other reason. They won’t, but they should. He’d be a danger under these conditions even if he wasn’t the vilest person ever to walk into the Oval Office.

Trump is a fascist. Alternatively, he is merely playing one on TV because he has tapped into a fascist movement in America. As I’ve said before, the second option is far worse. Either way, the Republican Party and a fair number of their supporters are willing to accept at least a little fascism to get what they want, while denying there is no fascist problem. The greatest danger to American democracy is the idea that there is no danger to American democracy.
