How Donald Trump Just Raised Many Mortgage Bills

In one of his very first substantive moves as president, Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday that will result in a hike to many first-time homeowners’ mortgage bills.

Trump, who claimed a populist mantle in his first speech as a president, signed the executive order reversing an Obama-era policy less than an hour after leaving the inaugural stage.

The order will have the immediate effect of increasing the amount that most non-wealthy homeowners must contribute to the Federal Housing Authority’s insurance program. Beginning Jan. 27, most borrowers will now have to pony up six-tenths of a percent of their mortgage each month, up a quarter of a percentage point from last year. Americans with $200,000 mortgages will pay roughly $500 more in 2017 than they did in 2016, according to the FHA.

I’ll admit to my thorough ignorance of this issue. But, why was this at the very top of his to do list? I don’t recall FHA mortgage insurance rates being a major campaign issue for him. Yet, of all the things he could have done in the first hour of his presidency, he picked this kind of arcane issue that will seemingly do little other than suck a few more bucks out of lower and middle class homeowners. The hell?

So now even if people have access to health care it can be really really crappy health care. He has essentially turned the insurance companies into death panels that decide who lives or dies depending on their bottom line and profit margin.

The order states what Mr. Trump made clear during his campaign: that it is his administration’s policy to seek the “prompt repeal” of the law, which has come to be known as Obamacare. But he and Republicans on Capitol Hill have not yet devised a replacement, making such action unlikely in the immediate term.

What I bolded is my takeaway from this, and also (as others have stated in other threads) - I’d be surprised if the changes will be, ultimately, substantial, and instead, just a bunch of little “band-aid” alterations (if he even gets around to those), and then he’ll stamp it “Trumpcare”.
Hoping I don’t turn out to be woefully wrong on that speculation.
