I’ll tell you one thing for sure. If that bastard Chump ends up NOT being indicted for something, then that will put paid to the notion that no one is above the law. Don’t want to make a martyr of him? Fuck that. Maybe you would have been afraid of making a martyr out of Hitler too.
I know some people think Comey is the epitome of evil and probably deserved this, but I don’t. I think Comey actually tried to do the right thing in an impossible situation not of his own making, unfortunately colored by his own personal weakness for being in the spotlight. He has paid for that in spades.
McCabe did nothing except his job.
No one should be subjected to this kind of persecution. Fascism indeed.
According to the linked NYT article, the McCabe audit took place during the America-hating fuckstick’s term (2019 on a 2017 return), and Comey’s in 2021 on a 2019 return. Same IRS chief was still in the post.
I agree, he deviated from the norms of DOJ internal policy, and that started the huge mess he and we all found ourselves in.
But this is a hijack to this thread and I don’t wish to engage in it here. Happy to have the discussion elsewhere in a thread better suited to it, but I’m not going to start one, since Comey’s behavior wasn’t the reason I brought up the audits.
I am much less forgiving of Comey than you are (I agree with you about his personal weakness for the spotlight).
But when I heard about Trump’s almost-certain misuse of his power, in order to harm two men who’d offended him, I was fully and completely appalled and disgusted. I felt not one scintilla of pleasure that Comey had been subjected to this.
Online I’m seeing a lot of people shrugging this off as ‘the way things work’—even people who I believe to be actual Democrats (not operatives pretending to be Democrats).
That’s a horrific mistake. We cannot accept this.
The IRS announced today that its own Inspector General will be investigating. That is not enough. Some agency not connected to the IRS must conduct a complete investigation. (DOJ?)
But the IG at the IRS is exactly who should be investigating this.
All agencies traditionally have IGs who are in place for just this purpose. It was Trump who (predictably, I’m sure you’ll agree) broke the norms by firing virtually all of them.
This is part of government getting back to normal. The IGs have a crucial role to play. I am glad we are getting them back and they are doing their work.
Just so you’re aware (and maybe you already are), one of the reasons the DOJ and FBI were able to move on Jeffrey Clark when they did is because the IG at DOJ, Mike Horowitz, opened an investigation into Clark’s alleged improper conduct at DOJ back in January 2021. His office is has overseen and conducted the investigation, gathering evidence of Clark’s activities, during all this time.
IGs have all the same law enforcement powers as FBI, and the two agencies often work together to accomplish their tasks. Their sole function is to ensure that the agencies they work for don’t commit illegal acts.
Not always possible when the executive is a walking, talking crime spree in progress at every moment.
I think that’s the one that devolved into posters one-upping each other on exactly how they’d piss on Donald’s grave. So I always hesitate and think “Do I want content, or bad pee jokes?”
Note that he is endorsing a secretary of state candidate in Michigan who believes abortion is satanic and that demonic possession is a sexually-transmitted disease.*
*she says that if you point out stuff like that, you are an “anti-Christian bigot”.

There’s been a sequel thread to this one for about a year, now, which was started with the expectation that this thread would auto-lock when it hit 10,000 posts, which it never quite did.
Still, no point in having two of the exact same thread going, so I’ll close this one now.
