Heh. I remember that from my Soviet Studies course. I also remember the collective-farm manager who said, “Moscow pretends to pay us, and we pretend to work.”
Thinking about it, maybe some IT folks are grifting Trump. “Sure we can put together a social media site, oh, for about $20,000. It’ll take about 3 days”
It’s inevitable. When Trump said that he wanted a platform in defiance of “big tech” then it meant he wasn’t going to utilize any existing successful service.
It’s like saying you are going to build a new car in defiance of the automobile industry. So you’re making every single part, every nut and bolt yourself. I would not expect that car to run. You are going into this with an arm and a leg tied behind your back and a blindfold. You’re making it too hard.
Is there some set of right-wingnut outfits for web hosting, domain names, DDOS protection, content distribution, and so on? I’d guess he’d be anathema to the Cloudflares, Akamais and GoDaddys of the world.
I don’t know who is hosting Trump’s Правда (that is, where the actual servers are), but the message board software is Mastodon,
and open-source (I think) freeware message board software package. Although free, it does come with a few strings, which Trump’s Правда may already be violating. The license requires linking to (or giving credit to) the Mastodon folks for this software, and any modification to the open source must be shared back to the Mastodon folks. Trump’s team, of course, is apparently accused of violating both these conditions.
Bezos may protect his wealth with all the fervor of the right-most of the right wing, but apparently those who code the Amazon search function have a bit of a leftist bent.
A comment on Mike Pence (though not about doormats) that hit home, today–it’s in response to a Vanity Fair article describing how Happy and Prosperous Pence is these days:
Little typo there in the first word of the tweet, but otherwise: devastating. (The tweet itself has a link to the VF article.)
