Exactement, as the French would say. It is not necessary for you and I to lik him or respect him for him to be charismatic. Adolf Hitler was also charismatic, as is Putin for certain people. Zelensky is definitely charismatic.
And can also think on his feet - “I don’t need a ride, I need ammunition”
Personally, Ithink there’s a lot to admire about that man and the Ukraine population in general. Very resolute. But I’m not sure how they win against Putin’s army. But I’m off -topic; this is supposed to be about Trump. His admiration for Putin definitely pisses me off. What will happen to support for Ukraine if he wins in 2024?
I think Zelensky will forever be Trump’s enemy. Back in 2016, the FBI said they were investigating Hillary Clinton at just the right moment and because of that, Trump won the election. He was counting on Zelensky to say something about Biden being corrupt so he could repeat this trick in 2020 and Zelensky let him down. The price he will pay for that is having his entire country overrun by Russia if Trump gets back into office.
But FWIW, I think Trump should be under enough stress now that a health crisis ought to be imminent for him. Time and chance happens to them all, as they say.
And not just him, the whole current Republican movement’s u-turn on Putin is, well, frankly I’m struggling to find the words to describe it.
Many or most 'Dopers are probably old enough to remember when Russia and its dictators and autocrats were regarded as the major bogeymen in the Republican worldview precisely because of their non-democratic government and territorial ambitions in Europe.
I really do struggle to put into words how I feel about it:

it could be described as surprising but at the same time Republicans have always had an authoritarian streak so maybe not;

I seem to recall that the only events in Santa Barbara were paddling events at Lake Cachuma. I certainly would have remembered if there was an Olympic soccer match at Harder Stadium. There was an Olympic Village at UCSB, but like I said, for the paddling events.
Actually, I find it quite easy to understand and I’m not pissed off about it, just baffled. The only thing the Republican movement have in favor of Putin is their hero, Tan the Conman hates Putin’s enemy. That means they must operate under the concept of the idol of my idol is also my idol. They have no in-between in threir heads, just adoration and abhorrence. The saddest part is they are taking their cue on which to apply to whom from Tan the Conman.

My problem is that “baffled” doesn’t do it for me, because I have long had the opinion of grassroots Republicans that they’d come to hate anyone that the Republican leadership told them to hate, if required. In the same way as (if you are familiar with pro wrestling) the WWF has at various times convinced fans to start regarding a heel as a face or vice versa (and at about the same level of intellectual capacity). So it’s not baffling.
But it’s not not baffling either.
