I read a first hand account from a woman who had gone on a date with him in the '70s. He was driving a sporty convertible. He showed up an hour late, took her to a hamburger joint, “forgot his wallet,” and still expected her to put out.
He was young once, and it’s just a very American male thing, especially in that generation, to drive around in a sporty car.
That said, he’s pushing 80 now vs pushing 70 before he was POTUS, and there’s a lot of people his age who just don’t drive themselves, especially if they have somebody else who can do it for them. And given how sensitive he seems to be about his public image and some of his known fears of seeming physically incapable (his mincing walk down ramps and the odd 2 handed water bottle thing), it’s no surprise he wouldn’t want to be seen driving and potentially doing something boneheaded he could be excoriated over. At that level, his mental image would be that important people are driven, they don’t drive themselves unless it’s to show off for some kind of PR op.
