Cleveland was an outlier which messed up the count and I guess nobody really put any thought into it at the time. Truman was also confused about it.

But you can be sure that if Trump is elected he will make this into the biggest deal possible. He gets two numbers! And he deserves it unlike that loser Cleveland. He will never shut up about it.

It doesn’t makes sense to refer to individual 1 as the 45th president if Biden came after him as the 46th. While rare, a person can serve two non-consecutive terms, though most have the humility to leave when their time is done. Trump has no humility. Nonetheless, if he were re-elected, he would indeed be the 47th POTUS. I believe they count by presidential terms, not bodies. An eight year term (which is the norm unless you’re a girly-man loser) would still be one uninterrupted term.
In my case I am forever loyal to the 45th President.
But since I learned that a reelected Trump would be the 47th? That will not stand! He has lost my vote.
I almost wish trump had won four years ago. The pain would soon be ending instead of beginning.

It used to be “He wants to be president for life” was the hallmark of conspiracy theory nonsense about the US President. But Trump, in his first term, was the only president who actually talked about it, even if he claimed to be “joking”. That’s qualitatively different from anything that came before him.
I don’t know for sure that he’ll do this, but the fact that I’m not sure he won’t do it is really disturbing. He’s made the outlandish seem plausible.
Grover Cleveland has always had two numbers for his two terms as President, in every listing I’ve ever seen. I hope he holds his unique record as the only POTUS to serve nonconsecutive terms for many years to come!
If Trump wins this election he will talk about how he now has two numbers, 45 & 47, all the time. He will never shut up about how special that is and, yeah, one other president had two but nobody remembers that loser democrat and he didn’t get more votes than anyone in history so only Trump really deserves two numbers, 45 & 47, but he just calls himself 47 because it’s a more beautiful number because it’s bigger but 45 is beautiful, too, and he is the best president ever! The merchandising alone will bring on nightmares. We can’t let that happen.
