I think what we have on display is a cornered rat in DJT, unable to escape the fate that is becoming more obvious, even to him, by the day. There is no way that Trump actually read Clear and Present Danger (I’m pretty sure Trump has very poor literacy and can barely read at all) but it seems someone has summarized the plot for him and he thought it was a great idea:
