I initially had this thought while reading the thread about the case concerning the classified documents in florida. It would have been a hijack in that thread but I think it fits here.
Trump is engaging in classic internet trollery here. He’s taking a well-known and well-established fact, removing all context and twisting it into a straw man.
When anyone tries to point out the inconsistencies in this logic the response, not necessarily from Trump himself of course but from supporters, will be that Trump somehow understands the law better than anyone else and they’ll hang their hat and point at the technicality about what this policy actually says. I’ve seen many trolls on this very bored engage in this very form of trolling.
MAGA’s just a bunch of internet trolls that Republicans are insisting on electing to Congress.
Exactly. The FBI were going to the home of a suspected criminal to remove evidence. I would be surprised if they didn’t have guns and were authorized to use them anytime this situation occurs. This is just another example of trump thinking the normal rules and laws don’t apply to him.
I also just saw a headline on MSNBC telling me that Nikki Haley is planning to vote for Trump. What power does he have over you and why do you keep giving it to him? Has Joe Biden ever called you a racist name or called you a bird brain? If you ran against Joe Biden and won, would he send a mob to the Capitol? What is the risk of Joe Biden putting you up against a wall because you dared to oppose him? And now think about what that risk is with Trump who has openly promised a vengeance tour. You’re on that list Nikki. His brain might be dripping out his goddamn ears on a daily basis but he never forgets who has wronged him. And don’t think you’ll be saved by him mixing you up with Pelosi either. In cases of ambiguity you both get it.
You know, I often wonder how many of these outspoken Republican “supporters” that loudly proclaim they will be voting for Trump are… you know, doing that same thing that Trump does every single time he opens his maw and lets the turds fall out… what’s it called… oh, yeah. Lying. That in the privacy of the voting booth, they’ll either vote for Biden or leave that space blank.
It makes me smile to think of it, because I suspect there are at least a few.
A lot of them lately have been claiming there was an assassination attempt on Kavanaugh. There wasn’t. There was a guy who was planning it but who called the police on himself without doing anything.
Thank you, I take some comfort in this. It would be the most Trumpian thing to do to tell Trump you are going to vote for him but stab him in the back when he isn’t looking.
Apparently some MAGA social media influencer FOIAd the FBI memo from the Mar-A-Lago raid. The memo outlined the process that the agents would take while serving and executing the warrant. The memo covered the contingency that Donald Trump and his Secret Service detail would be on the scene at the time that the warrant was executed - they planned for a time when he wouldn’t be there, but prudently covered the case if he happened to show up or be there unexpectedly.
The memo said that the FBI should “engage” with the Secret Service to ensure that the warrant would be executed correctly.
Now, to a normal reader of this memo, including the FBI agents themselves, this means that obviously they should talk to the Secret Service about what they’re doing, how long it will take, and what kinds of things they’ll need the protective detail to do while it’s happening, and to hear from the Secret Service about what they need to keep their principal protected.
But that’s not what the MAGAnaut said.
The MAGAnaut said that this word obviously meant that the FBI agents were to initiate combat with the Secret Service, which became the headline that got passed around the right wing infosphere and turned into Trump’s “Truth”. So now right wingers from all over the U.S. are absolutely convinced that the FBI was all ready to go in with guns blazing and shoot at fellow federal law enforcement agents because of the fact that they’ve been led to believe so, and this notion is somehow so truthy to them that they aren’t going to try to find out what the real truth is.
Now, I’m already on the perverse side of Brandolini’s Law with this post, and I know this is the Pit and we’re here mostly to blow off steam at it all, but I do think it’s useful from time to time to understand how the right wing infosphere gets its notions of how the world works, if only to try to roll back the curtain for those in our lives on just how it is that they are getting so badly deceived by those that they - for some reason - trust the most.
Maybe I’m an optimist, but I think for some it may be worth it.
I hadn’t heard of that, but it’s so true (from Wikipedia):
Brandolini’s law, also known as the bullshit asymmetry principle, is an internet adage coined in 2013 by Alberto Brandolini, an Italian programmer, that emphasizes the effort of debunking misinformation, in comparison to the relative ease of creating it in the first place. The law states:
The rise of easy popularization of ideas through the internet has greatly increased the relevant examples, but the asymmetry principle itself has long been recognized.
Its usually fun and calming to vote Libertarian, knowing they won’t win but this year, no, I can’t throw my vote away like that.
If only I could convince enough people to do so also!
Ohio, I know, but every little vote counts.
Well my money is on the FBI since there are more of them. And would Trump’s detail really be willing to jump in front of bullets for him? Oops, thought he was over there and jumped totally the wrong way! Everyone else has betrayed him and they have seen it all so who is to say they are as loyal as he thinks they are?
Funny how Biden has had all this time to deploy the actual weapons of the weaponized DOJ and he only ever tried once. Unlimited power but Sleepy Joe has no idea how to actually use it. Trump’s incredible trick of avoiding the assassins by not being home has foiled this plot in perpetuity! Well, at least until the Supreme Court rules that a President has unlimited immunity for everything at which point Biden can try again but with SEAL Team 6 this time instead of easily fooled FBI agents.
Have you checked out the Wiki page on the US’s Liberal Party? Anyone voting for the Liberal Party candidate for prez/veep is throwing away their vote. (And I’m saying this as someone who votes for the Democratic Party candidate in Georgia for those offices.)
I understand that you hold the view that the universe was created by an entity that harbors and (ultimately) enforces preferences for the way free-willed sentient beings act. I presume that many of your acquaintances hold similar notions.
It may only persuade a small fraction of them to order their behavior appropriately, but if you’ll just float the proposition that it’s a sin to vote for a Republican, well, every little bit helps.
