I could understand people voting for Trump in 2016. He is, after all, a consummate con-man.
After four years’ experience with him if you’re paying the slightest bit of attention, in 2020 not so much.
After January 6th and its fallout where you have to be living under a rock to avoid the news I have no patience, pity, or understanding at all.
These two statements are contradictory.

Exactly. These are, by most conventional appearances, quite accomplished people. Well educated and successful in their chosen fields. Were you to speak to them at length about any topic other than politics, they would strike you as thoughtful, likeable and interesting people. That’s one of the things that makes it so frustrating, and so scary. They’re perfectly normal people. And they believe wholeheartedly that Joe Biden hates America and wants to destroy it.
I think one big issue with Trump voters is that deep down inside, perhaps a place they themselves only occasionally visit, and surely won’t admit, they are racists, bigots and homophobes.
Trump and his crew have made that ok.
How could Lindsay Graham been so wrong about Biden?
In 2015, Graham and Biden were close. Documentary footage from that year shows Graham tearfully describing their friendship and praising Biden. “The bottom line is, if you can’t admire Joe Biden as a person, you got a problem. You need to do some self-evaluation, cause what’s not to like… He’s the nicest person I think I’ve ever met in politics,” Graham said. His voice choking up, he continued, “He’s as good a man as God ever created.
”
He wasn’t wrong - he just didn’t later want to get on the wrong side of Cheeto Mussolini.
Graham has no integrity. He’s just a remorah that follows the biggest shark.
That’s where I am now. While I realize I can’t just ignore 70,000,000 of my fellow Americans, I’m pretty much done with their nonsense. My mother is a major MAGA supporter and it’s strained our relationship because I can’t help but call out the baloney when I see it. My sister and her husband are MAGA supporters but we’ve all wisely decided to avoid politics.
One of the more difficult things I’ve found when talking to MAGAts is that I can’t tell if their beliefs are genuine. They’re so far outside of reality that I don’t know if they actually believe what Trump’s saying or they just go along with it to own the Libs or for some other reason.

Likewise. I have a BIL that is a Trump supporter. Well I think so. We don’t dare talk politics.
Maga’s did not crawl out from rocks. Trump kicked over the rocks and exclaimed “You can be a rich racist asshole that marries models, just like me. Vote for me!”
Sadly, that’s all it took. And unfortunately, through Mitch McConnel’s SC picks, these assholes will get some degree of protection.
Trump and his crew have not only made that okay, they’ve made it a source of delicious and delightful Righteousness and Patriotism and Honor. Your feelings that those icky inferiors need to be put in their place are RIGHT AND GOOD!!1!!!11!
For those who are dismayed when their Inferiors–non-whites, females, gays, etc.–fail to bow and scrape and treat them with reverence–Trump has the solution. Trump WILL make all those inferiors bow and scrape to their superiors! And those superiors will finally, even if living lives of humiliation and failure, stand forth as THE LORDS OF CREATION!

Most people read Hell’s Angels for the lurid stories of sex and drugs. But that misses the point entirely. What’s truly shocking about reading the book today is how well Thompson foresaw the retaliatory, right-wing politics that now goes by the name of Trumpism. After following the motorcycle guys around for months, Thompson concluded that the most striking thing about them was not their hedonism but their “ethic of total retaliation” against a technologically advanced and economically changing America in which they felt they’d been counted out and left behind. Thompson saw the appeal of that retaliatory ethic. He claimed that a small part of every human being longs to burn it all down, especially when faced with great and impersonal powers that seem hostile to your very existence. In the United States, a place of ever greater and more impersonal powers, the ethic of total retaliation was likely to catch on.
Remember what Trump said: “I am your retribution.”
This, except none of them are rich or marry models.
But they all are racist assholes, and they are vocally proud of it.
