Trump has pissed me off today by being part of the new story of ‘somebody shooting at Trump, maybe.’
It’s all breaking news at this point but I find it impossible not to consider the likelihood that Trump, nostalgic for those days just a few weeks back when he was being given sympathy and attention like never before in his life, had something to do with creating this new story.

Let me get one thing out of the way up front: I absolutely love the fact that Donald Trump cannot get anyone to give a shit that people (apparently) are trying to shoot him. It’s the kind of humor you can’t script. We can, and should, enjoy his fear and unhappiness. As we discussed on the last podcast, Trump earns an exemption from any generalization like “Nobody should have to live in fear” or “Nobody’s life should be threatened by gun violence.” Those statements are true and broadly applicable, but Trump is exempt. We all deserve to see him cowering in fear for the rest of his shitty, miserable life.
But what we are seeing from the right, particularly from elites on the right, is interesting. It is the slow, dawning realization that the world they created for the rest of us to live in is, on some fundamental level that even their wealth and power cannot circumvent, the same physical world in which they live. They can opt out of so much of what makes our lives more miserable than they need to be, but they can’t opt out of the omnipresent threat in the United States of a lunatic armed to the teeth deciding that today’s the day he’s going to try to get his name on Wikipedia.
They have been shrugging at this problem for 25 years and forcing us to accept as a fact of life that any time we go to school, the mall, a concert, a sporting event, a parade, a picnic, a…hell, any time we step out of our homes and enter public space, we have to accept the risk of getting shot by some twitchy, deranged (almost inevitably white and male) person who we simply must allow to arm himself to the teeth. So if Donald Trump now finds himself having to think thoughts like “Should I go to this public place, or should I stay home because I might get shot at?” all I have to say is, at long last, welcome to the fucking club. Not one of us - and this is to say nothing of parents who have to think every day about sending their kids to schools that are such desirable targets to spree killers - manages to avoid having that thought. Have any of us, at some point in recent years, not had second thoughts about attending a crowded public event specifically for these reasons?
If we’re not going to do anything to solve the problem, and I’m convinced that we won’t at any point in my lifetime, then I guess the consolation prize is distributing the misery more equitably. I’m sorry people are shooting at Trump, but not nearly as sorry as I am that people have been shooting at all of us for quite some time now and people like him not only did not care, but they did everything possible to cheer it on. If I won’t live to see a better world I’ll take some small comfort in living to see these people slowly realize that they’re not insulated from what they’ve forced the rest of us to live with. You fuckers live in this world too. Hope you enjoy the fear and danger as much as we do.

And it’s not just that the right has encouraged the availability of weapons of war to every mentally-ill person in the nation–it’s that the right has explicitly sold the idea that Violence is a Righteous Tool of Political Expression.

I do recall Trump talking about a 2nd Amendment solution to the Hillary problem back in 2016.
And that’s a big part of his appeal for many of his fans. They adore Putin for throwing his enemies out of windows, and they’ll go on adoring Donald—especially if he goes on calling for violence (which he will!)
