The story, which should’ve gotten more play, is that Chris Wray said that although they opened an FBI tip line for the Kavanaugh investigation, the procedure they used was to send all tips to the White House and let them decide which tips to pursue and which ones to ignore.
Really. So much for it being non-political. Wray said it was totally normal because it wasn’t a criminal investigation, and the FBI is only forbidden from being political in criminal investigations.
So when does the executive branch get to decide which tips are worth checking out?
Can you imagine the furor from the Right if this happened regarding a nominee from a Democratic president?
When the investigation is a RE-investigation, not an initial investigation – which this one was. That permitted Trump to call the shots.
Also remember: Kavenaugh had previously been investigated by the FBI under prior administrations when he was appointed to the federal bench. Twice. Those investigations didn’t turn up the evidence of Kavenaugh’s misconduct, either.
We knew all this at the time it was happening during the re-investigation. Chris Wray simply confirmed it.
