Who then in his second Inaugural address implored us to approach them with malice towards none, with charity towards all, and re-iterating the importance of supporting those doing the actual fighting and for those who fell, their widows and children.
Eloquent words and noble sentiments from a great man.
And now fast forward to the current Republican President, who has made it a priority to cut support for widows and children and for veterans (and calling them suckers and losers to boot). And whose followers’ would respond to Lincoln’s sentiments with “Fuck your feelings”

This is a huge story.
Trump is deep-sixing the First Amendment. He is outlawing dissent.
This may be “merely” two guys. But if Trump gets away with so-called investigations that make up stuff and then gets these men imprisoned, it’s just the beginning of the prosecutions of those who’ve dared to say something that displeases him
(To my mind this merits its own thread. Though at the moment I’m not sure if the Pit or P&E may be the ideal venue.)

I don’t think so. It’s the exact same thing he did in his first term. The investigation itself is the goal, not incarceration. I doubt there will even be charges; there almost never is because there doesn’t have to be. He sends federal employees to be his goons, threaten and harass people legally, and when it’s all over and there is no evidence of wrongdoing, oh well no harm done except the living Hell we put you through for months for daring to say something Trump didn’t like.
It’s classic Trump. I assume it’s the #3 reason why he loves being POTUS, after the other perks which are “I’m immune to jail” and “everyone is forced to give me attention”.
Also, Trump runs the Executive branch. Investigations are under his control. Anything beyond that stage goes over to the courts where he no longer has full control. I suspect that’s another reason why these retaliatoty investigations seem to never get that far. It isn’t as satisfying to watch other people take over from him.
