How has the disgraced, CONVICTED FELON, former but once again President Trump pissed you off today? (Part 2)

Not to mention the fact that in the US, the last major association most people had with the phrase “gentlemen’s agreement” had to do with embracing bigotry against Jewish people.

The phrase really hasn’t been in wide circulation in any other context.

They’re over there begging for a picture with him.

It’s rough when the cool kids are all having fun without you.

Um… What?!

I hear it all the time in various contexts, having nothing to do with Jewish people.

Your cite is a film from 80 years ago?

Maybe it’s a joke, but if so, it didn’t land at all.

I associate it with real estate, as in a more-or-less tacit pact among property owners that they’d never sell to one of “those” people (not just Jews) and thus preserve the integrity of the neighborhood. A variant of redlining, designed to keep “them” in their place.

Weird, I’ve never associated that phrase with that sort of thingl. Though I’ve not heard it in any real context at all.

The movie may not be current, and although you may not have heard of it, it’s pretty well known and it was also based on a book.

I was embarrassingly old before I learned the connection between the verb “gyp” and Gypsies. No wonder they prefer Roma now.

The algea in the Reflecting pool is a conspiracy. What was once the “Deep State” is now the “Semi-Shallow State”.

Yeah, thanks. And as @OttoDaFe remarked, the phrase “gentleman’s agreement” is still connected with bigotry.

If we’re talking ‘unwritten contract’ the more usual phrase would be “handshake agreement.” By contrast, the “gentlemen’s” phrasing implies one class of people protecting their status from incursion by some other class of people.

I’ve only rarely heard the term “handshake agreement” before. I’ve heard the term “gentleman’s agreement” many times without the implications you’re giving it. This seems completely fabricated to me and doesn’t match my experiences at all.

I think you’re ascribing, at best, a very obsolete meaning to the term hardly anyone uses anymore. At best.

For your information:

Theut use for discriminatory practices is minor and not the main usage of the term. And it’s pretty obsolete.

I had to laugh at this :face_with_hand_over_mouth:: the notion that something seems completely fabricated because it doesn’t match your experiences. At all. Or am I inferring causality where none was intended?

…Why? That’s a completely normal reaction. If I say a sunny sky is purple and it has always been blue to you, wouldn’t you react the same?

For what it’s worth, I’m 53 years old, and grew up in Southern Indiana and Kentucky, and I’ve never heard “gentleman’s agreement” used in a racial sense, either.

Perhaps. And it’s questionable whether the hillbilly from Hillbilly Elegy is familiar with that usage. Still, some Jews may have long memories, and the use of the term in any context could be triggering.

As an aside: when I was growing up, we had the term gentlemen’s bet, which was a wager with no stakes beyond “Ha, Ha, I was right and you were wrong.”

I think it’s a normal reaction. But I probably wouldn’t react that way. I would like to hear about experiences that were different from mine and thus learn new things. I’m not “normal” like other people.

I saw where the Turd now has cops and National Guard people guarding the sewage pond against the libtards. And today we’re treated with the spectacle of them handing out a citation to a man for “destroying government property”. Seven cops surrounding this guy while one of them writes the ticket. Turns out that the man is a three-time Olympian canoeist who is on a 50 mile bike ride. He stopped to see the pool and then made the mistake of reaching in for a piece of the detached latex to see what its texture was. SWARM! SWARM! SWARM! Meanwhile, Shit For Brains is desperately trying to deflect from the fact that he hired someone incompetent on a no-bid contract and continues to make dark comments about the “dumocrats” who are sabotaging his good work.

“Really? Cool, what did you guard??”
