The New York Times reported on Trump’s speech yesterday at Mount Rushmore. He seemed to aim his speech at the newly successful Democratic Socialist candidates by talking about the dangers of Communists.
Communism, he said, “is the enemy of July 4, 1776.” He called it a bigger threat than Pearl Harbor and even 9/11. He name-checked Karl Marx.
“Communism is the exact opposite of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” he declared. “It’s death, tyranny and the pursuit of evil.”
Can we not invent a new bogeyman?
I thought Republicans loved communists. Why are so many of them sucking up to and working for Putin?
“Was it over when the Communists bombed Pearl Harbor?”

I mean, he’s not wrong about Communism, but I’m a little more concerned about Fascism at the moment.

Possibly the Donald of a decade ago could have come up with a ‘vote GOP’ sales pitch that would have been effective. He still had a few neurons firing, back then.
Today, however, all he can do is rip off the 1950s. (His glory years.)
It’s unlikely to work. Voters who remember the 1950s, when COMMUNISTS!!! were the most terrifying monsters on the planet, are likely already voting GOP (or dead set against it). Donald’s pitch isn’t going to change the minds of any 80+ voters.
And anyone younger than that will find OOOOO, COMMIES!!1!!! to be utterly unconvincing as a reason to get out and vote for a Republican.
Maybe. The instant somebody says “Socialist”, that rallies all the right-leaning crowd younger than ~50yo into a frothing frenzy of hatred. And the 50+ crowd too.
And lots of right-leaning folks “know” that socialist and communist are almost, but not quite, equivalent doctrines.
Now if the orange menace had started going on about the threat the Soviet Union now poses to the USA, a few right-leaning folks would maybe dissent. But they’d be the very few who heard the speech on MSM, not of Faux where that part would’ve been edited out.
Certainly ignorance of the meaning of those words is playing a role, here. And there’s plenty of anxiety about the “socialist” part (which must thrill many news outlets, as they now have a reliable attention-getting topic to beat into the ground).
I still think that as sales pitches go, this will not be judged to be one of Donald’s best.
The issue isn’t the particular definition of the various snarl words – the issue is that they are, to younger generations, exclusively snarl words.
In the 1950s “socialist” and “communist” meant, “similar to the government of the Soviet Union and similar states were Bad Things are conspicuously happening”. But for the last 30 years or so at least it’s just been “a word you say in place of a reason why we can’t implement otherwise popular policies”. Without at least the memory of the looming presence behind the words, the impact starts to wear off.
It had actually turned into a joke. Like - what, ketchup on your hot dog? What are you a communist?
Not anymore. They take the fun out of everything by thinking boogey-men are real.
We need everyone to keep stressing the fact that it’s a sin to vote for a Republican (or to facilitate the ascension into elected office of one).

There are a higher number of younger people who have a positive opinion about communism than there was when I was younger. When the economy and the political system doesn’t work for you then you see people embracing more radical ideas like communism or even fascism, the lessons of history be damned.

He pissed me off by interfering in the World Cup and by being a huge hypocrite by doing it. Balogun is a poster child for anchor babies. His Nigerian parents who were living in London traveled to the US when his mother was 7 months pregnant and had him in NYC. Trump doesn’t think he should be a citizen except when it’s useful to have him on the US team. Then all anchor baby complaints magically disappear.

Now he’s just enshittified the World Cup. Not just this year, but for many years to come. FIFA was always just a little bit suspect when it came to corruption. Now it’s out in the open, above board. I would not be surprised in 4 years if there was an active bidding grift process to determine the winner.
Nah, FIFA was openly corrupt before this. The last two World Cups were brazenly corrupt (while previous ones were still corrupt but somewhat less obvious about it) and the last one involved hundreds if not thousands of immigrant worker deaths to build the stadiums. That’s a low, low bar to clear, but we did manage not to rob and kill virtual slaves imported to build facilities.
But admittedly, whenever Trump gets involved, the corruption takes on a low class, cheap quality that makes you almost envious of rule by a higher class of autocratic oligarch
