Oh yeah, as the parent of an autistic kid I probably should have mentioned that one. It’s just that it’s all so horrible I never really know which thing most merits my outrage. But RFK Jr. thinks autism is a ‘‘disease’’ which is such a fundamental error I can’t fathom how anyone could trust his claims about anything. According to people I know who work in the field, it is already driving parents away from getting their kids diagnosed, which was a big enough problem before he said that dumb shit. And now I have to send certified letters to all my son’s doctors making it clear my son’s medical history is private. They may not listen but they’ve gotta at least know we’re pissed off.
RFK says autism ''destroys families." No, it’s pervasive social stigma, lack of access to care, and lack of familial and government support that destroys families. Parents of autistic kids are not taking this shit lying down. You KNOW you’ve pissed some people off when Autism Speaks and ASAN co-sign an open letter together. ASAN regards Autism Speaks as a hate group.
I want to underscore that autism exists on a broad spectrum, and that includes people who have severely debilitating symptoms and intellectual disability. Those people, and their parents, do deserve resources, but there are political forces trying to halt research into so-called ‘‘profound’’ autism. There are a lot of very messy and very political issues among various factions of autistic people at various support levels, autism researchers, medical professionals and so-on – and let’s not forget the eugenicists! But ultimately what it comes down to is a lack of resources to help everyone on the spectrum. RFK had an opportunity to highlight an important issue and maybe have a positive impact on autism research, but because he is an incompetent lying asshole, he totally fucked it up.
Vaccinations being the cause of autism is the primary tool that the antivax crowd use, because at one time a study was given credibility before being completely discredited. But it’s the closest thing they have to some kind of research to back up their claims.
Now, for that argument to work, they need to demonize autism. The agenda from the very beginning is to paint autism as a plague, and to shape their policies to support that narrative.
It’s just straight evil from start to finish.
Trump is destroying the medical research laboratories, and scientists are leaving. The next pandemic will make COVID look like the common cold.
