They’d do it for free if the government subsidizes them for it.
I don’t see Trump and Musk doing that.
They’d do it for free if the government subsidizes them for it.
I don’t see Trump and Musk doing that.
They technically do it for free now.
Of course, they also make it very, very easy to screw up and opt into a pay option and very, very hard to figure out how to get the free option.
Here we are, living through the Second Gilded Age:
This is the part that jumped out at me:
Heuermann claimed Trump gave a 20-minute speech “and didn’t interact with the crowd other than enjoying being celebrated,” according to his post. “Even VIP token holders (I know some) couldn’t speak or even shake hands with the president. It was still well worth it to experience the president live and watch his mightily secured arrival and departure.”
They paid all that money for a private dinner and the top 25 were promised an extra special private meeting but he wouldn’t even speak to them or shake their hands. He is not going to have a lot of people paying for access if there is no access.
There’s a sucker born every minute.
“The current administration in the United States of America has invited me to a state visit to that country. As that administration has provent, and continues to prove, it is not a reliable ally nor can it be trusted to make any meaningful or sincre agreements, I shall not accept such an offer until sanity is once again in the White House. I owe that to the people I serve ad I shall serve them as my oath of office requires.”
That is how I would love to see a head of state or head of government respond.
A line in the budget bill repeals an excise tax on tanning beds. Because, IDK, White people have a desperate need to make themselves brown, or at least somewhat orange.
From the newsletter of Heather Cox Richardson last night:
the White House has stopped publishing a database of official transcripts of President Donald J. Trump’s announcements, appearances, and speeches altogether and has taken down those it had published. Instead it will just post videos
and
A presidential administration traditionally publishes the president’s words promptly to establish a record. The Trump White House, in contrast, says removing the transcripts will enable people to get a better sense of Trump by watching his videos. But it’s likely closer to the truth that Trump’s appearances since he took office have been erratic, and removing the transcripts will make it harder for people to read his nonsensical rambles.
Also, from The Hill, Trump claims that autism is being caused by ‘something from the outside’:
President Trump said Thursday that autism must not occur naturally, citing figures inflating the spike in autism and suggesting the administration’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission could provide answers.
“When you hear 10,000, it was 1 in 10,000, and now it’s 1 in 31 for autism, I think that’s just a terrible thing. It has to be something on the outside, has to be artificially induced, has to be,” Trump said at a MAHA Commission event. “And we will not allow our public health system to be captured by the very industries it’s supposed to oversee. So we’re demanding the answers, the public is demanding the answers and that’s why we’re here.”
Aliens? Ghosts? Inter-dimensional beings? Oh, wait. It must be vaccines.
IAUI, the “spike” in autism that so many MAGAs like to quote is cause by a redefining of the autistic spectrum and now more people qualify to fall on that spectrum but there’s no increase in severe cases of autism.
I knew a anti-vaxxer who was telling me about this–now autism is everywhere. I said to him: ‘Imagine that to be considered “tall” for a male, you had to be over 6’3" and to be “extremely tall” you had to be over 6’9". Now imagine they change the definition of “tall” to being over 6’ but don’t change “extremely tall”. Now you have a lot more “tall” guys but not “extremely tall” guys.’
I could see the cogwheels spinning in his head but I don’t think the gears caught.
1 in 10,000 must be something he pulled out of his ass.
Another factor, I think, is that in the past, autistic people just died. They died in the womb prematurely, in childbirth, and probably as infants because they wouldn’t eat certain foods and “failed to thrive.” Those kids who we now feed with feeding tubes? They’d be dead.
We know there is a link between complicated births and autism. Our infant mortality rate has plummeted, which means more autistic people are surviving.
Also screening happens for all pediatrician visits now. They never screened when I was a kid.
There are also more resources like Early On. In our state you can get your kid evaluated for public school services before the kid is in school. A lot of kids get caught that way. You take your kid in for a speech delay and guess what? It’s autism.
Check out this article and pay special attention to the photo of the filet mignon with demi-glacé and the pan-seared halibut with citrus reduction. I’ve had better looking food from a box of Stouffers.
My guess is that the Venn Diagram of crypto bros and foodies is two separate circles. .
The old diagnosis/naming/description used to be mental retardation. A child/adult could be anywhere in a spectrum from mild to highly retarded. That word has been retired as well as the diagnosis. It simply doesn’t exist anymore. Now it’s autism. One term went to zero, the other has arisen in its place.
For Donnie Diaper, " Is this AUTISM in the room with us now?"
And people who used to have what we called Asperger’s are now ASD support level 1.
Another factor is the flood of new diagnoses for women and girls. This is true of ADHD as well. Girls weren’t diagnosed because we didn’t know what to look for.
In the 90s I had one girlfriend diagnosed with ADHD and she was SUPER hyperactive to the point it affected her friendships. I had at least one probably autistic girlfriend who we never even thought about.
I have ADHD that is so so against the male stereotype we still have clinicians who have no idea what it looks like in women and girls. I myself had no idea that I had ADHD until I was 34, even though I could easily spot it in male friends.
For both ASD and ADHD the general consensus is that girls and women are a lot better at hiding it.
So with half the population once having been overlooked, yeah, I would expect rates to increase.

And thanks for posting that photo. I know there’s some sort of hack that’s lets you post photos, but I’ve never been able to make it work.
It actually looks worse than the meals I was served when I flew on IcelandAir last year.
