How is this going to end?

One of my coworkers gave that one for our recent election.

He is late fifties and has never voted. I think he is honest when he says he doesn’t see a difference between the parties. He is a very capable and skilled individual, but has no aptitude or interest in politics other than being outraged by taxes. I don’t think he even cares one way or another about Canadian sovereignty. He was shocked last month when he was going to Vegas for the weekend and I told him I would likely never visit the US again. Maybe its best that some people that don’t want to vote, don’t.

Who was the poster here that adamantly defended her choice to not vote in the 2016 election and then rapidly admitted she made the wrong decision when Trump got in? I really respected her courage and ability to not be limited by a bad decision in the past.

I pointed this out to my 3-time Trump-voting mother when she told me that my sister may lose her job due to cuts in Federal funding.

Point out that since a fetus has no opportunity to sin abortion is their ticket to Heaven. Take care to stand clear of the exploding head.

Doesn’t work: original sin is there, not yet washed away by baptism. The fetus has to be born to get baptized.

Things have drifted a bit from the OP so, I don’t feel bad for adding my 2 cents.

Assume, for a moment, that there is no god or gods. Then, the idea of souls, sin, heaven, hell and god told me to do or say this or that are all out the window. No crutch for supporting your beliefs that may not have a rational basis. What are we left with? People who are left to follow or not follow societal norms. Religion and mystical beings are not necessary to to have morals. Altruism isn’t dependent made-up entities. Other animals exhibit altruistic behavior and you don’t them killing each other over their invisible lords. I propose that religion/god is off-limits as a basis when making or enforcing laws. I don’t want to hear about it. F the bible or Koran or whatever. The world would be a much better place for it. The love of money may be at the root of all evil but religion is running neck and neck.

Well, political opponents and critics of Trump should take heed.

Stranger

It’s got to get physical, right? At some point we’ll have collectively had enough and hell will break loose. Maybe a good companion thread could be about what we think will be the proverbial last straw, personally and nationally.
Sorry for the hijack.
In my darker moments, I have visions of our allies(if there are any left) having to come and liberate us, then arresting or killing all the maganazis.

That’s not gaslighting, it’s outrageous lying in an attempt to brainwash the brainless.

Sadly, I think you’re right. At some point, a straw will have broken the camel’s back (and don’t ask me what that straw will be), and we’ll see protests/riots the likes of which will make the George Floyd protests, CHAS/CHOP in Seattle, the Rodney King riots, Watts, Detroit, and Chicago look like pleasant Sunday afternoon strolls in the park.

I’m sure that Trump and his MAGAs would love to see that happen, so the military could be called out, and Kyle Rittenhouse-wannabes can play Rambo, and they’ll teach those lib’rul, leftist, immigrant-loving commie socialists once and for all. But I think they’ll find that the other side also has guns, and can improvise explosive devices, erect barricades, and the like, on a wider scale than they have before.

I hope I’m not right about this.

I wish I thought so. But I think that Americans are so passive/despairing that even when it gets to the point of death camps, they’ll mostly just complain about the Democrats and shuffle their way to their death without resistance.

‘This why I didn’t vote for Harris, the Democrats have done nothing to stop Trump!’ ~ Written on a Walmart ICE camp wall, author unknown

That’s my expectation. It’s clear that Trump and the MAGAs won’t stop of their own accord. They’ve been consistently pushing back on every court ruling that’s gone against them, while also ignoring the boundaries of what was previously considered normal and/or legal, while pushing deliberately false narratives like the above in service to all of that.

They will not stop until they are made to stop. One would hope that this would be through the mechanisms of legitimate governance, with police and other law enforcement agencies enforcing the judgements of the courts, but so far, that entire system has utterly failed to do any such thing. So it will likely have to be by some other means, the nature of which we can only speculate upon.

I’m more convinced every day that he’s gonna make his grab for continuing power in 2028. The between-census redistricting scheme under way in Texas is another part of the plan; a friendly House willing to fracture norms makes things much easier. Unfriendly judges and elected Democrats will be threatened, impeached and even imprisoned to cow the official opposition.

I don’t see Americans ever doing anything to stop him, it’s just not a vibrant society made up of people committed to democracy. I suspect, like the Soviet Union, the fringes will break away. If there is bloodshed, it will be the result of other nations trying to stop us.

As long as the discussion is “Something is going to happen” and not “something is going to cause us to do something”, then nothing is actually going to happen. We will sit and moan and watch, because we have been trained to do just that.

Fine by me. As a native Californian, and as a current resident of blue state Washington, the whole left coast can be our own country. (I wouldn’t even insist eastern Washington and eastern Oregon join us.) I’d include Hawai’i, only they have standing to become their own country.

I don’t think we will have to wait for him to make a power grab in '28. I have said it before - there is no way DJT and his allies will allow the GOP to lose control of the House or Senate in '26. I don’t actually think the Democrats have much chance even in fair elections of taking either chamber but IF they do there will be something manufactured to keep GOP control.

If I thought it was possible, I’d be all for it; California would be perfectly viable as its own nation, much less with other states added to it. Large, diverse economy, large population, access to the ocean for trade and so on. The fascists would nuke us rather than let that happen, however.

Me too. We can’t keep paying for red state America’s bad decision making.

I’ve usually thought that this whole mess would be for the US to break up. It would be messy, though. States like maybe Vermont or New Hampshire might be willing to join the west coast country. Imagine the travel restrictions or passport requirements. And probably no more of the Ore-Ida brand!
