Here’s an older thread on this very topic.

Nationality - U.S.

Age - 54 (but pretty much had my traveling done by 28)

38 or so (some of the countries, I visited are now different places, [Ceylon, Cambodia and Burma], more places [Yugoslavia and Micronesia] and controled by different people [Hong Kong and South Viet Nam] and I’m still trying to figure out Cyprus.

Let me run them here just for the heck of it: South Viet Nam, Cambodia, Micronesia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Philipines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, Bangladesh, Ceylon, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Isreal, Egypt, Cyprus, Greece, Yugoslavia, Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, Luxemburg, Holland, Belgium, England, Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, Canada, and Mexico.

Everything except Mexico, Canada and the U.S., of course, were done in a seven year trek around the world pretty much by thumb (it got a bit challenging when I ran into oceans though, but managed it by working or trading my way across).

Quite right! I think you have to spend several days in a country before you can say you’ve visited it. I have a friend who solemntly told me exactly the number of countries he’s been to (20 or so) turned out he includes travelling through France and Belgium on the way to Germany even though they only stopped in those countries for coffee! Somewhat childish I think.

Oh yeah - I’ve visited about 8 countries for more than a week. NOT counting Wales and Scotland as they are part of the UK. “Passing through” would add about another 10.

Nationality: US
Age: er, 47
Countries visited: 20

Angola, Antiqua (West Indies), Belgium, Canada, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Guatemala, Netherlands, Italy, Monaco, Peru, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, Tunisia, Trinidad, UK, Vatican City, Zimbabwe

Countries landed in while in transit: Belize, Gabon, Mexico, Portugal

Scottish, 56

lived and/or worked in:
England, Scotland, Wales, Eire, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrein, Libya, USA (18+? states), Canada (18)

visited:
Russia, Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan, Greece, France, Jamaica, Mexico, Lebanon, Syria, Switzerland (10)

28 so far, more to come (I hope)

P.S. I am Scottish first, British second (by a neck), European third (by a distance), I will count England, Scotland, Wales as separate countries.

Sparrow,
I agree stop-overs don’t count, especially if you don’t leave the airport. But I do think a full week is a bit harsh as a time cut-off time for counting visits to a particular country.

If you leave that stipulation in, I then have to cut a few from my total:
Japan (5 nights), Fiji (5 nights), Solomon Islands (3 nights), Zambia (3 nights), Belgium (3 nights x 2), Morocco (1 night). :frowning:

That leaves UK, Rep. Of Ireland, Iceland, France, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Bulgaria, Greece, Denmark, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, Mexico, Peru, Botswana, Zimbabwe & South Africa. I think.
